The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Lagos State University (LASU), successfully organized the Freshers’ Orientation and Scholarship Award Ceremony 2025 in partnership with Alumni (Diaspora and Homeland). This event took place on Tuesday, 28th January 2025, at the S.L. EDU Hall, Faculty of Science, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos.
The programme was designed to welcome freshers into the Mathematics department, while also recognizing and rewarding academic excellence through prestigious scholarship awards. The event drew a diverse and distinguished audience, including esteemed guests, current students, and accomplished alumni from both Nigeria and abroad, who shared their valuable experiences and insights with the new students.
Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Vice-Chancellor, was represented by Professor Olufemi Adigun-Lawal, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. In her remarks, conveyed through Prof. Adigun-Lawal, the VC warmly welcomed students and guests, expressing her deep affection for the Mathematics department. She urged the students to remain focused, resilient, and committed to their academic pursuits, while also commending the Mathematics department for its groundbreaking achievements and innovative spirit.
Professor Moses Akanbi, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Guest Speaker, delivered a thought-provoking keynote address that underscored the crucial role of determination in achieving success. Highlighting the practical applications of Mathematics, Prof. Akanbi explained how mathematical principles can be used to solve everyday problems, such as optimizing bread production and understanding the relationship between arm span and height.
The Head of the Department of Mathematics, Dr A.L. Olutimo, presented an inspiring overview of the diverse career paths available to Mathematics graduates, sharing success stories of accomplished alumni making their mark globally.
Dr A.S. Wusu followed with a comprehensive review of key academic policies and expectations, guiding students through essential topics such as calculating Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and meeting academic requirements for graduation.
Dr (Mrs) Aminat Ige, Chairperson of the organising committee and representative of the alumni, brought heartfelt greetings and words of encouragement from the alumni to the freshers. She then announced the recipients of the prestigious scholarship awards, with each awardee receiving a cash prize of seventy thousand naira (N70,000) and a certificate of recognition.
The event culminated in a lively Question and Answer session, where lecturers addressed students’ queries, creating an interactive and enlightening atmosphere.
In her closing remarks, Dr (Mrs) Ige expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and stakeholders whose collective efforts ensured the event’s resounding success.
