The Jigawa State Government has launched a groundbreaking education reform program called “JigawaUNITE,” aimed at enhancing the quality of public primary education across the state.
Implemented under the supervision of the Ministry of Basic Education and the Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the program seeks to elevate teaching standards, improve learning outcomes, and modernize classroom instruction for thousands of pupils.
The program’s first phase has been successfully completed in Dutse, the state capital, where a 10-day training session for teachers and school leaders was conducted. The Commissioner for Basic Education, Lawan Yunusa Danzomo, emphasized the crucial role teachers play in shaping the future of society, stating, “Teachers are the umbrella of success; they are the models and champions of change.”
He added that the state government, under the leadership of His Excellency Malam Umar Namadi, introduced these reforms to equip and empower teachers to guide the next generation effectively.
Over 1,449 teachers and 250 head teachers will participate in an intensive induction program focused on effective classroom practices, learner engagement, and the use of digital teaching tools. The Board Secretary of SUBEB, Bello Ballama, highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring every teacher in Jigawa is trained, equipped, and supported through this initiative. He noted that JigawaUNITE is a long-term investment in the future of the state’s children and education system.
As part of the program, teachers will be equipped with tablets preloaded with structured lessons and performance-tracking software, enabling them to deliver stronger, more consistent instruction. Ballama expressed optimism that the initiative would lead to more energized classrooms, confident teachers, and engaged pupils. The ultimate goal is to build foundational literacy and numeracy skills in every child, setting them up for success.
The Chairperson of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Jigawa State chapter, Abdulkadir Yunusa, has already witnessed significant changes, stating that teachers are receiving valuable training that will help them shift their mindset and engage students more effectively.
JigawaUNITE is built on a global model that has proven successful in countries like Rwanda, Kenya, and Liberia, as well as in several Nigerian states. By combining teacher coaching, real-time classroom data, and proven pedagogical methods, the program aims to deliver measurable improvements in learning outcomes for all children across Jigawa State.
The mission of JigawaUNITE is clear: to dramatically improve learning outcomes in government schools and provide quality education for every child in the state.
