The debate between academic degrees and practical skills is a false choice; they are two legs of a single journey.
To master the modern professional landscape, you cannot hop along on just one; you need the stability of formal knowledge and the momentum of hands-on experience to truly hit your stride.
A Degree is a formal academic qualification awarded by a recognised university, polytechnic, or college upon completion of a structured program of study, for example, Medicine, Engineering, Education, etc.
Skill is the ability to perform a specific task or solve a problem effectively, usually through practised knowledge, experience or repetition, for example, copywriting, digital marketing, etc.
For a long time, we believed a university degree was the surest path to success. Get a degree, get a good job, and life falls into place. Today, that promise is incomplete, not false.
Diplomas still open major doors, but in Nigeria’s changing economy, practical skills have become just as powerful. The question is no longer degree or skill; the real question is: why would you ever choose just one?
Here’s the truth: A credential without competence is theory without power. Competence without credentials is power without a path.

You need both! Here’s why:
1. A Degree Gets You in the Room, Skills Give You a Seat at the Table.
A degree is your passport. It tells employers, clients, and institutions: This person has done the work, followed the process, and earned the right to be here.
In fields like law, medicine, engineering, education, and finance, a degree is non-negotiable. You cannot sit for certain exams, get licensed, or be trusted with lives and money without it. But once you’re in the room? Nobody cares about your certificate any more. They care about what you can do right now.
- Your degree gets you the interview, while your skills get you the job.
- Your degree satisfies the HR checklist; however, your skills make your boss glad they hire you.
- Your degree helps you get promoted, while your skills help you survive and thrive anywhere.
Without a degree, you may never enter certain rooms, and without skills, you won’t stay in them.
2. Employers Are Desperate for Both – Theory Without Action Is Useless, Action Without Theory Is Risky
Employers today have zero patience for graduates who cannot do anything practical. But they also have zero patience for self-taught people who don’t understand the fundamentals. They want both.
Example:
- A digital marketer with a degree in Mass Communication and proven ad campaigns? Hired immediately.
- A programmer with a computer science degree and a GitHub full of projects? Promoted faster.
- An accountant with a degree and mastery of QuickBooks and Excel? Indispensable.
The strong point being that a degree without skill is a manual without a machine. Skill without a degree is a machine without a manual. Together, you’re a factory.
3. The Digital Economy Rewards Skills – But Formalises Them With Degrees
Yes, you can learn graphic design, copywriting, web development, or video editing online for free. Yes, many Nigerians are earning dollars on Upwork and Fiverr without stepping into a university. That is real. That is powerful.
But here’s what the internet doesn’t tell you: The same freelancers who earn without degrees often hit a ceiling. They struggle to get visas. They lose corporate contracts to degree holders. And they earn less for the same work because clients trust the certified person more.
Which is why, Skills earn you money today, but a degree multiplies what you earn tomorrow.
- Skills give you freedom, whereas a degree gives you an advantage.
- Skills make you a craftsman; however, a degree makes you a professional.
Don’t trade one for the other. Use skills to earn while you study, and use your degree to earn more for the same skill.
4. Entrepreneurship Needs Both – Ideas Fail Without Skills, Skills Fail Without Structure
Many young Nigerians are starting businesses, and that’s excellent, but building a business requires real skills: marketing, sales, negotiation, operations, and customer service. Without those, even the best idea dies.
However, skills alone are not enough to scale. Growing a business requires understanding contracts, managing people, accessing loans, handling taxes, and building trust with investors and partners. That’s where degree-level thinking in cases of research, analysis, ethics, and systems becomes just as critical.
- Skills help you start. A degree mindset helps you scale.
- Skills help you survive month one. A degree foundation helps you last ten years.
- Skills make you a hustler. A degree makes you a CEO.
The most successful entrepreneurs in Nigeria either have degrees they use daily or they hire people who do. You cannot build an empire on vibes alone.
5. A Degree Alone Is Weak – Skills Alone Are Limited – Together, You’re Dangerous
Let’s be honest, thousands of graduates enter the job market every year. Most of them cannot do anything except write exams. That is a tragedy.
But also, thousands of skilled self-taught people are underpaid, overlooked, or exploited because they lack the paper that proves they understand the bigger picture.
Here is why;
- A degree alone makes you a walking CV with nothing to show.
- Skills alone make you a worker who can never become a director.
- A degree + skills makes you the person everyone wants to hire, promote, and partner with.
Internships, side projects, freelancing, and portfolios are not alternatives to degrees. They are companions. The strongest candidate is the one who walks in with a certificate and a body of work.
Does This Mean Degrees Are Everything? No. Does It Mean Skills Are Everything? No.
In medicine, law, engineering, pharmacy, architecture, and education, a degree is the law. You cannot practice without it. Period.
But even in those fields, the best doctors, lawyers, and engineers are the ones who learned practical skills alongside their degrees. They did internships, they practised, and they built.
In creative and digital fields, skills can open doors faster than degrees, but the people who go furthest eventually get certified, or combine with a degree, because trust opens bigger doors than talent alone.
How to Build Both at the Same Time (Not One After the Other)
You don’t have to finish one before starting the other. Here’s how to walk both paths together:
- In university, don’t just read for exams. Learn to apply what you study. Build projects around your coursework.
- Use free online resources (YouTube, Coursera, Google Skillshop) to learn practical skills while earning your degree.
- Take every internship opportunity, even short ones. Experience is the bridge between theory and practice.
- Offer your growing skills to small businesses, friends, or local shops. Learn in public.
- Build a portfolio alongside your CV. Let people see your certificate and your work.
Remember: Your degree is your foundation. Your skills are your tools. A foundation without tools is useless. Tools without a foundation collapse.
Final Thoughts
Stop choosing and start combining. The world is changing, but not in the direction of “degrees are dead.” That’s a lazy headline. The real change is that degrees alone are no longer enough, and skills alone are no longer enough.
The only safe place is having both. If you want to stand out, earn more, create opportunities, and build something that lasts, do not drop your degree, do not ignore skills.
Do both, master both and use both because it’s not about what you studied, and it’s not just about what you can do, it’s about what you can do because of what you studied and what you built beyond it.
