The 2025/26 UEFA Champions League semi-finals delivered drama, tension and history as Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain booked their places in the final after hard-fought second-leg encounters against Atlético de Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively.

Arsenal End 20-Year Wait
Arsenal reached their first Champions League final in two decades after edging Atlético de Madrid thanks to Bukayo Saka’s decisive close-range finish in the second leg.
Heading into the tie, the Gunners carried an impressive European record. Mikel Arteta’s side remained the only unbeaten team in this season’s competition, extending their streak to 14 matches and matching the club’s longest-ever unbeaten run in the European Cup and Champions League.
Arsenal also had history on their side at home against Spanish opposition. They had lost just once in their previous 15 UEFA home matches against Spanish clubs and had already beaten Atlético 4-0 earlier in the campaign.
Still, Diego Simeone’s Atlético were never going to make things easy. Los Rojiblancos came into the match boasting a perfect UEFA semifinal record against English opposition, having previously eliminated Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in European knockout ties.
It ended level at the first leg, but Arsenal knew they had a strong record in UEFA knockout ties after drawing the opening away match.
The breakthrough finally came through Bukayo Saka, whose composed finish sent the Emirates into celebration and sealed Arsenal’s first appearance in the Champions League final since 2006.
This tie also highlighted the impact of Viktor Gyökeres, who became the first Swedish player to score in a Champions League semifinal during the first leg.
For Atlético, the defeat continued a worrying trend against Premier League sides. Los Rojiblancos have now lost five consecutive UEFA away matches against English clubs.
PSG Survive Bayern Pressure
In Germany, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain produced another mature European performance to eliminate Bayern Munich 6-5 on aggregate after a tense 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena.
Before the second leg, both teams had already written themselves into the history books. PSG and Bayern entered the match as the two highest-scoring teams in this season’s Champions League with 43 and 42 goals respectively — the first time two clubs had both crossed the 40-goal mark in the same edition.
Luis Enrique’s side struck early in Munich. Less than three minutes into the match, Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé finished off a devastating counterattack to put PSG ahead on the night and strengthen their aggregate lead.
Bayern pushed forwards but struggled to break down the disciplined Paris defence. Harry Kane eventually scored in stoppage time, but it was too late to prevent elimination.
This defeat was another painful semifinal disappointment for Bayern, who have now lost five consecutive two-legged Champions League semifinals.
Despite their dominant home form in Europe, the German giants once again fell short of returning to the final for the first time since their 2020 triumph — ironically against PSG.
Paris, meanwhile, continue their pursuit of history. The French champions are aiming to become the first club since Real Madrid to successfully defend the Champions League title.
Kvaravatskhelia continued his outstanding campaign by equalling Zlatan Ibrahimović’s PSG record of 10 goals in a single Champions League season, while Dembélé’s remarkable form saw him score twice in each of PSG’s last two Champions League matches.

The stage is now set for a fascinating Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.
For Arsenal, it is a chance to win Europe’s biggest prize for the first time in club history and crown their remarkable unbeaten European campaign.
For PSG, it is an opportunity to cement a growing dynasty under Luis Enrique and achieve back-to-back Champions League titles.
