WWE SmackDown delivered its final show before Backlash 2026 on Friday, 8 May, live from the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.
Smackdown Live had one job the night before Tampa: make sure fans cared about what was coming. Jacob Fatu made his intentions crystal clear. Cody Rhodes and Gunther signed up for a future war in Italy. And somewhere in the middle of it all, a man sang at a Gingerbread Man’s funeral. Standard SmackDown, 2026 edition.
However, the biggest story of the night did not come from a match. It came from a contract. Paul Heyman appeared in the ring and revealed that the title match between Cody Rhodes and Gunther, the one everyone has been expecting since Gunther choked Rhodes unconscious last Friday, will not happen at Backlash.
It will happen on 31 May at Clash in Italy, in Turin. Heyman called it a favour to Gunther. Rhodes called it an inconvenience. Gunther called it an opportunity by attacking from behind, only to get driven out of the ring by a microphone to the face.
This show also marked the returns of Jade Cargill, Michin, and B-Fab, the first time all three had been seen since WrestleMania 42. They dismantled Rhea Ripley, Charlotte Flair, and Alexa Bliss in a post-match ambush that completely changed the landscape of the women’s division on SmackDown. For a go-home show, May 8 planted as many seeds for the future as it watered for this weekend.

Fatu Sets the Tone
Jacob Fatu opened the show before a capacity Jacksonville crowd and spoke about the match everyone is waiting for. He did not talk about wanting to win the title. He talked about needing to win it for his family, for every person who was told they would never be enough. The Usos came out to warn him. Jimmy told him he was proud of him but terrified for him. Jey, who has lived through what Roman Reigns does to people emotionally and physically, told him the worst part would not be the loss but watching his wife and children sit front row and acknowledge the Tribal Chief.
Fatu’s response was short and direct. He cannot lose. He told Jey he is all gas, no brakes. And he warned both Usos clearly: if they interfere at Backlash, he will burn the entire family tree down. His music hit, and the crowd was completely behind him. That is exactly how you open a go-home show.
Gunther Sets a Date in Italy
The Cody Rhodes and Gunther segment was the most important of the night regarding future storylines. After Heyman delivered the news that their title match would be in Turin on 31 May at Clash in Italy, Rhodes called Gunther’s bluff and invited him to throw down right there in Jacksonville. Gunther jumped the barrier and charged the ring. Rhodes saw him coming and hit him with a microphone. He threw Gunther out. He told the crowd he is easy to find but hard to beat.
Heyman’s closing line deserves attention. As he left the ring, he told Rhodes: “Sooner or later, they all need the Wise Man.” Nobody in that building missed the implication. Is Heyman positioning himself for something more than a one-off favour?
Why This Match Works
Gunther has not lost cleanly in over a year. He defeated Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 42 Night 1. He ended John Cena’s retirement tour. He retired AJ Styles and Goldberg. Rhodes beat him at Crown Jewel in 2024, making their rematch a natural headline for a European pay-per-view. With Backlash already sorted for Saturday, WWE gave both men five weeks to build towards what looked like the biggest match of the summer.
Stratton Retains: The Giulia Split Continues
Tiffany Stratton defended the Women’s United States Championship against Kiana James in the night’s best match. Stratton has been impressive since turning babyface and her ring work showed genuine improvement across the eight-minute contest. James targeted Stratton’s left leg throughout, slamming it into the ring post and keeping her grounded for long stretches.
The finish came when Giulia, James’s ringside partner and former title holder, got onto the apron and distracted the referee. It backfired. Stratton took advantage, hit James with a spinning elbow and a Samoan drop, and then finished with the Prettiest Moonsault Ever for the pinfall. After the match, James and Giulia stood across from each other in the ring saying nothing. Their split is coming. It is just a matter of when.
The MFTs and the Bloodline Chaos
Damian Priest asked R-Truth to stay backstage for his singles match against Talla Tonga. R-Truth did not listen! He came out anyway, got ambushed by Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga at ringside, and forced Priest to come to his rescue. This distraction allowed Talla Tonga to hit a chokeslam and pin the Tag Team Champion. It was a logical finish that built consequences without burying anyone.
Royce Keys made the save, clearing the MFTs from ringside and backing up both Priest and Truth. That brought a response from Solo Sikoa backstage, who has been trying to recruit Keys since his debut. Tama Tonga told Solo that Keys is a problem, not an ally. Meanwhile, the split between Sikoa and his own faction continues to simmer.
Later in the evening, Keys pinned Tama Tonga cleanly with the Ultimate Spinebuster, continuing his unbeaten run on SmackDown. Shinsuke Nakamura then appeared backstage to needle a frustrated Tama about still being in the MFTs. Nakamura walked away smiling. Something is building there.
Jade Cargill Returns and Changes Everything
The six-woman tag team match between Fatal Influence and the trio of Rhea Ripley, Charlotte Flair, and Alexa Bliss was rolling towards a Ripley victory. However, Jade Cargill appeared at ringside, pulled Ripley off the apron, and sent her face-first into the ring steps. Jacy Jayne used the distraction to hit the Rolling Encore on Bliss for the win.
However, the post-match was even more significant. Cargill got into the ring. Michin and B-Fab followed. All three laid out Ripley, Flair, and Bliss in sequence. Cargill stood over Ripley, the woman who took her WWE Women’s Championship at WrestleMania earlier this year, and made her statement without a word. The Baddies are back, and the women’s division on SmackDown looks very different tonight than it did last Friday.
The Gingerbread Man’s Funeral
It would be wrong to call it a match. Trick Williams held a full funeral service in the ring for the Gingerbread Man mascot, complete with a gospel choir, five pallbearers in black, and a three-minute song performed by the United States Champion himself. Sami Zayn eventually interrupted, cutting a genuinely passionate promo about respecting the prestige of SmackDown and the United States title, before hitting Trick with a sucker punch while the crowd held their breath.
Then the Gingerbread Man sat up in the casket, and the mask came off. It was Lil Yachty. He hit Zayn with a candy cane. Trick hit the Trick Shot. SmackDown went off the air. Professional wrestling, ladies and gentlemen!
The Backlash Card SmackDown Built
This Smackdown episode did exactly what a go-home show is supposed to do. It settled scores, raised stakes, and sent fans into Tampa with clear reasons to care. Here is the card SmackDown spent the night building towards:
