Aston Villa are Europa League champions.
On Wednesday, 20 May 2026, at the Beşiktaş Stadium in Istanbul, Unai Emery’s side dismantled SC Freiburg 3-0 to end a 30-year trophy drought and write themselves into European football history.
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía, and Morgan Rogers sealed a dominant, one-sided final that never really threatened to go any other way. How the Match Unfolded

Emery: The Europa League’s Greatest Manager
Before the final, Unai Emery insisted he is not the “king” of this competition. His record says otherwise. Wednesday’s triumph was his fifth Europa League title, making him the most decorated manager in the tournament’s history. He has now won it three times with Sevilla, once with Villarreal, and once with Aston Villa, becoming the first manager to lift the trophy with three different clubs.
To put that achievement in perspective, only Carlo Ancelotti has won a single major European competition as many times, with five Champions League titles to his name. Emery is in that conversation now.
“I need to win with the players we have at Aston Villa,” he had said before kick-off. He did exactly that.
The Villa Heroes
John McGinn lifted the trophy as captain, a deeply emotional moment for a player who has given almost a decade of his career to this club. He is the first Scotsman to captain a side in a major European final since Barry Ferguson led Rangers in the 2008 UEFA Cup. Seven years ago, McGinn was celebrating a promotion from the Championship. On Wednesday night, he held a European trophy above his head in Istanbul.
Meanwhile, the nucleus of this squad has been together for years. Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins, and Emiliano Martínez were all part of that promotion team in 2019. Jadon Sancho became the first player to appear in the finals of three different major European competitions in three consecutive seasons, following the Champions League in 2023-24 and the Conference League in 2024-25.
The Wait Is Over
Villa’s Europa League victory earns them a place in the 2026 UEFA Super Cup against the Champions League winners. Their domestic finish already secured a second successive Champions League campaign for next season.
However, the question of whether Arsenal can complete a domestic and European double on 30 May in Budapest now takes centre stage. If they do, English clubs will have won both major European trophies in the same season. For Aston Villa, however, the job is already done. Istanbul belonged to them. The wait is over, and the trophy is going to Birmingham.
