Safety, Infrastructure, and Corruption, road travel can be the worst.
Road travel, despite being the most common means of transportation in Nigeria, is riddled with multiple difficulties and challenges.
These range from safety, or the lack thereof, infrastructural deficiencies, and the pervasive issue of corruption, which plague the country’s roadways. It leads to a lack of development and endangers the lives of the people.

Safety Concerns as a Road Travel Challenge
Safety is one of the major challenges which Nigerian road travel faces. While road travel in Nigeria has been in existence since the beginning of time, road accidents are still a very common occurrence.
There are various factors that can cause road accidents such as:
1. Careless and Imprudent Driving
This is one of the most common factors that leads to road accidents, thereby threatening the safety of the people.
It involves actions such as speeding past the required safety limit, driving while intoxicated, and the dismissal or disregard for traffic regulations. All of these happen on a daily basis and at exceedingly high rates.
The inability to strictly enforce rules against such activities results in the endangerment of both the drivers and pedestrians.
The rules which are put in place for the safety of the people are sometimes intentionally and completely ignored. In other cases, people tend to claim that they are unaware of these rules. Ignorance, however could lead to accidents resulting in injuries and in worst case scenarios, death.
2. Lack of Vehicle Maintenance
Vehicle maintenance is a largely ignored factor. Many vehicles on Nigerian roads are poorly maintained, with faulty brakes, worn-out tires and defective signal lights.
Owners tend to ignore the frequent maintenance which is required of a vehicle, either as a result of laziness or sometimes lack of understanding.
Often times, these vehicle owners forget that their lack of vehicle maintenance increases the risk of accidents, thereby endangering themselves, their fellow drivers and pedestrians.
3. Nighttime Hazards
Dimly lit roads, dull road signs that cannot be seen in the dark, and the prevalence of extremely large trucks can create a particularly dangerous environment for night travellers.
The absence of street lights and neon-coloured road signs can lead to a series of road hazards because the drivers are unable to see the roads and the dangers ahead, which the street lights and neon coloured road signs are meant to signal to the drivers.
4. Road Robberies and Kidnappings
A major factor that adds to the safety concerns of the Nigerian road travel challenges include armed robberies and kidnappings.
Certain routes and roads, especially in remote areas of the country, are notorious for armed robbery and kidnappings.
This adds to the lack of safety in Nigerian road travel, it also instils a heavy layer of fear, insecurity and concern to road travellers.
Crumbling Infrastructure as a Road Travel Challenge
Nigerian roads infrastructure is in a state of severe disrepair and is sometimes referred to as a ‘crumbling foundation’.
The state of Nigeria’s road infrastructure is a major challenge to the country’s road travel and a major impediment to safe and efficient travel.
Road construction with the use of inferior materials, and years of neglect has led to the crumbling state of the foundation of infrastructure.
Some results of inadequate infrastructure and some factors which lead to the state of the roads include:
1. Potholes and Ruined Roads
This is a major problem with road travel that is heavily ignored. A large majority of roads are riddled with potholes, deep craters and uneven surfaces, making driving stressful, difficult and ends up causing significant vehicle damage. This can sometimes lead to road accidents.
2. Lack of road maintenance
The maintenance of roads in any country should be the job of the government. Unfortunately, those responsible for the maintenance of these roads tend to neglect their job.
Inadequate maintenance and neglect or refusal to tackle these tasks has led to the deterioration of existing roads, further compounding the problem and challenges which road travel faces, regarding infrastructure.
3. Illegal Truck Loading
Overloading of heavy-duty trucks, can lead to damaged roads over a period of time. There is usually a legal maximum number of heavy-duty trucks which are allowed to be on a road at a time.
The legal number is put in place as a guideline to avoid crumbling infrastructure and road damages. Neglecting the legal limit can contribute to road damage and pose a significant safety risk.
4. Flooding and Erosion
These are natural occurrences that can result to road damage. Seasonal flooding and erosion can lead to damaged roads as it involves the washing away of the top surface of the soil.
As a result, this could render them impassable and create hazardous conditions. Though flooding and erosion are inevitable challenges of road travel, they can easily be fixed to allow drivers as well as pedestrians to have smooth passage.
5. Inadequate Signage and Lighting
The lack of adequate signage and streetlights make road navigation a lot more difficult than it already is, especially at nighttime. The absence of these necessary equipment may lead to an increasing risk of accidents.
Corruption as a Road Travel Challenge
Corruption is a major challenge which road travel in Nigeria currently faces. Some of the challenges which corruption adds to road travel includes:
1. Bribery and Extortion
Bribery and extortion by law enforcement is a common occurrence. Road users often face bribery and extortion by law enforcement officials, who demand bribes under the disguise of enforcing traffic rules and regulations.
Sometimes when road users refuse to give out these bribes to the law enforcement officials, the officials get aggressive, shout and even threaten the road users.
Due to fear and to avoid embarrassment, most road users succumb to the demands of the law enforcement officials.
2. Diversion of Funds
The funds allocated for the construction and the maintenance of roads are often misused and misappropriated. As a result of this, there is an increase in shoddy workmanship and incomplete projects.
The diversion of funds does nothing but harm road users. Since allocated funds for road maintenance is embezzled and used inappropriately, the roads stay in horrible conditions. This makes making commuting difficult for road users in Nigeria.
3. Lack of transparency
The lack of transparency and absence of accountability is a major fact that leads to the rampant increase of corruption and hinder the development of road travel in Nigeria
The challenges of road travel in Nigeria have a significant impact on the economy. Increased travel times and vehicle damage translate to higher transportation costs for businesses, impacting the cost of goods and services.
The lack of reliable road infrastructures also hinders the growth of tourism and other sectors that rely on efficient transportation networks.
Solutions to Road Travel Challenges
Travel in Nigeria addressing the challenges which face road travel, needs a multifaceted approach. It requires effort from the government, law enforcement agencies and the public as a whole.
Some ways in which we can proffer solutions to the challenges of road travel in Nigeria include:
1. Improved Road Infrastructure
The government should ensure to invest in the construction and maintenance of quality roads is highly essential. By this, the government can help to eradicate the stress involved in road travel, ensuring safe movement for the public.
2. Strict Traffic Laws
Putting in place strict traffic laws, can help to reduce the challenges of road travel. Enforcing traffic regulations and placing persecutions to the offenders is very crucial to improve road safety.
3. Fighting Corruption
Using extensive measures to put an end to corruption in road projects and law enforcement is important to ensure safe and comfortable road travel
4. Enlightening the People
Enlightening and teaching the people about road safety and the importance of driving responsibly is very important.
This can help to increase road safety and reduce reckless driving and reckless endangerment of the people.
Final Thoughts
The challenges of road travel in Nigeria are significant, but not too great to overcome. By addressing safety concerns, improving infrastructure, and fighting corruption, Nigeria can transform its roads into safe and well-organised routes. This will lead to economic development and improving the quality of life for the citizens.
