WWE SmackDown produced a very storyline-rich episode of the current season on Friday, 12 June 2026, at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island.
With a packed card that advanced the King of the Ring and Queen of the Ring tournaments, the show delivered a shocking stipulation announcement. This saw Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn trade open-hand slaps in a confrontation that had the Providence crowd rivetted.
Jey Uso closed the show by winning a chaotic Fatal 4-Way main event to advance to the King of the Ring semifinals, but the most significant moment of the night had nothing to do with the tournament.
Gunther, still furious about the controversial finish at Clash in Italy where his foot was clearly under the rope during Rhodes’ winning pinfall, chose Sami Zayn as the special guest referee for their Undisputed WWE Championship rematch next week.
It is a big calculated chess move SmackDown has produced this year. Gunther knows exactly what he is doing, exploiting the fraying relationship between Rhodes and Zayn to create maximum pressure on the champion heading into the biggest match of the coming weeks.
Beyond those headline moments, Charlotte Flair advanced to the Queen of the Ring semifinals, Paige and Brie Bella retained the Women’s Tag Team Championships, and Rey Fenix successfully defended the AAA Cruiserweight Championship. Also, Solo Sikoa flatly refused to return to Roman Reigns’ Bloodline despite a direct message delivered by Jacob Fatu. Providence got its money’s worth and then some.

Gunther’s Masterstroke: Zayn to Referee the Title Match
Everything on this show fed into one central question. Can Sami Zayn be trusted to call a championship match fairly? Gunther’s announcement answered that question by making it entirely irrelevant. He does not care whether Zayn is fair or not. He simply needs Zayn in that position to make Rhodes uncomfortable. That is smart, manipulative, and completely consistent with the character Gunther has built.
Earlier in the evening, Rhodes and Zayn shared a segment that stripped their friendship down to its bones. Rhodes told Zayn he was desperate, that the whining and the neediness had replaced the man everyone fell in love with, and that if Zayn was being honest with himself, everything between them was only ever about the WWE Championship. Zayn snapped. He slapped Rhodes across the face, immediately covered his mouth in shock, and apologised profusely. Rhodes delivered a reply slap, asked if they were good, and walked off.
Moments later, Zayn grabbed a steel chair and charged back to the ring before stopping himself at the apron. He hurled the chair to the floor instead and stormed off. Later backstage, when Aldis confirmed the Zayn special guest referee stipulation to Rhodes, the champion simply asked: “Are we actually going to do this?” Aldis confirmed they were. Zayn, for his part, wished Cody good luck. His emotions are all over the place, as he himself acknowledged. That instability is precisely what makes next week so unpredictable.
Jey Uso Survives Chaos to Advance
Royce Keys was the physical story of the main event. He dominated early, throwing LA Knight, Finn Bálor, and Jey Uso around with a combination of raw power and aggression that had the Providence crowd genuinely believing he could win. Consequently, the other three united briefly, powerbombing Keys through the announce table in a desperate act of survival.
That should have ended his night. Instead, Keys rose from the wreckage, hit a spinebuster on LA Knight, and came within inches of pulling off a memorable upset of the tournament. Solo Sikoa then appeared at ringside, hitting LA Knight with a Samoan Spike that flattened the Megastar. Keys covered. Before the three count landed, Jey leapt from the top rope with a splash onto Keys, stole the pin on LA Knight, and advanced to the semifinals.
Key moments from the Fatal 4-Way:
- Keys absorbed a triple powerbomb through the announce table and still kicked out of a cover moments later
- Solo Sikoa’s Samoan Spike on LA Knight directly set up Jey’s winning pin
- Jimmy Uso was also present at ringside throughout
- Finn Bálor hit a Coup de Grace on Jey but Keys dragged him to the outside before the three count
The tournament’s semifinal picture is now taking shape. Jey Uso advances on the SmackDown side, with his route to the final potentially crossing paths with Oba Femi, who is also still active in the bracket following his Raw victory earlier in June. The prospect of a Femi vs Uso semifinal is a genuinely compelling storyline waiting to happen.
Charlotte, Paige, and the Women’s Division
Charlotte Flair advanced to the Queen of the Ring semifinals in commanding fashion, making Lyra Valkyria tap to the Figure Eight Leglock in a chaotic Fatal 4-Way. The 4-way also featured Jade Cargill, Sol Ruca, Tiffany Stratton, and Alexa Bliss at ringside. Stratton and Bliss neutralised B-Fab and Michin early, which created the opening Flair needed to close the match on her own terms.
Paige and Brie Bella retained the Women’s Tag Team Championships in a match that ended with Jacy Jayne ejected from ringside, a distracted referee, and Brie reversing Fallon Henley’s small package at the decisive moment. It was a creative finish that keeps the Fatal Influence in the picture without handing them an outright victory.
Meanwhile, Jade Cargill and her faction remained a destructive force throughout the evening. After the tag loss, they attacked Tiffany Stratton post-match. Cargill also cost Stratton and Chelsea Green their second match of the night, during which B-Fab and Michin picked up a pinfall win. Stratton’s frustration with Cargill is boiling over, and a direct feud between those two appears imminent.
Bloodline Drama Continues
Solo Sikoa rejected Roman Reigns’ invitation to return to the Bloodline directly and without hesitation. Jacob Fatu delivered the message backstage, and Solo’s response was blunt. He told Fatu that Reigns had humiliated him, made him kneel in front of their family, and treated him like a dog. “Tell Roman he can go to hell,” Sikoa said. Fatu confirmed he understood but made equally clear that if Roman sends him after Solo, he will come. The collision between those two feels inevitable.
The Road to Semifinals
SmackDown signed off with Jey Uso celebrating alongside Jimmy. Heading into next week, the Undisputed WWE Championship rematch between Rhodes and Gunther, with Zayn as special guest referee, takes centre stage. The King of the Ring and Queen of the Ring semifinals also loom, with Femi still in the bracket and Jey Uso now confirmed as a serious semifinal opponent.
Next week’s SmackDown in Providence promises to be among the most consequential episodes of the summer. Rhodes walks in as champion. Whether he walks out that way depends significantly on a man whose emotions are, by his own admission, all over the place.
