Another African nation has bowed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Ivory Coast suffered a painful 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 32.

Yet it was Norway who broke the deadlock in the 39th minute.
Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard picked out Antonio Nusa with an incisive pass before the winger curled a superb strike beyond Yahia Fofana into the top corner, giving Norway a 1-0 advantage against the run of play.

Amad Diallo Sparks Hope
Ivory Coast refused to surrender.
Coach Emerse Faé introduced Amad Diallo in the second half, and the substitution transformed the attacking threat of the Elephants.
The Manchester United winger injected pace, confidence and creativity into Ivory Coast’s forward line. His persistence was rewarded in the 74th minute when he combined brilliantly with Nicolas Pépé before producing an outstanding solo finish to level the contest at 1-1.
At that moment, the African side appeared to have seized the momentum, with extra time looking increasingly likely.
Haaland Delivers the Final Blow
Just when Ivory Coast seemed capable of completing the comeback, Norway’s biggest star produced the defining moment.
In the 86th minute, Patrick Berg helped launch a flowing Norwegian attack before Haaland arrived inside the six-yard box to finish from close range and restore Norway’s lead.
Despite late pressure; including another dangerous effort from Diallo that forced an excellent save from goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, Ivory Coast could not find a second equaliser.
The final whistle confirmed a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat and another painful World Cup exit for an African representative.

The coach praised his players for their commitment throughout the tournament but admitted they failed to remain defensively disciplined after finding the equaliser. According to Faé, matches against elite opponents are often decided by tiny lapses in concentration; something Norway exploited ruthlessly.
Another African Exit
The defeat is another disappointment for African football supporters hoping to see multiple nations progress deep into the tournament.
Ivory Coast had impressed during the group stage, qualifying after victories over Ecuador and Curaçao before narrowly losing to Germany. Their return to the World Cup knockout stage generated optimism, but Norway’s experience and attacking quality ultimately proved decisive.
