Ten-man United States beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the World Cup Round of 32 on Thursday, 2 July 2026, to advance to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2002.
Folarin Balogun opened the scoring just before half time before receiving a straight red card in the second half, but Malik Tillman sealed the win with a stunning free kick in the 82nd minute. Belgium now awaits in Seattle on Monday, 6 July. USA are through. It was not clean. It was not always comfortable. But it was enough.
Christian Pulisic summed up the mood directly after the final whistle. “We had to dig deep for that one,” he said. “It didn’t go exactly to plan with the red card, but that just shows what a good team we are. We said in the hydration break, you know, this is what it takes to be a really strong team. And we were able to do it.” His assessment captured something that raw statistics rarely show. USA scored with both of their shots on target.
Bosnia finished with more shots overall. Yet Mauricio Pochettino’s side adapted quickly after going to ten men, defended intelligently, and punished Bosnia a second time when Tillman stepped over the free kick and curled it over the wall. Pochettino became the first USA coach to win three World Cup matches in a single tournament.
Balogun also entered exclusive territory of his own. He became the fourth player on record to score a goal and receive a red card in the same World Cup knockout match, joining Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldinho, and Garrincha.
His three goals at this tournament now equal Landon Donovan’s 2010 tally, the second highest by an American at a single World Cup. The record of four, set by Bert Patenaude at the inaugural 1930 tournament, remains just out of reach.

Balogun Breaks the Deadlock Before Half Time
Far from the comfortable opening USA’s fans expected, Bosnia caused early problems with direct play and set-piece threat.
Gradually, though, USA’s press began to take effect. Balogun thought he had broken the deadlock before being flagged for offside. He kept pushing. Tim Ream intercepted a Bosnia goal kick at midfield and Tillman found Balogun in the box, who slid a left-footed finish into the bottom-right corner to make it 1-0 just before the break.

Red Card Drama Flips the Match
Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute after challenging Tarik Muharemovic from behind, catching him with his studs and landing on the defender’s twisting ankle. Following a VAR review, referee Claus upgraded the incident to a straight red card.
Pochettino was direct in his reaction afterwards. “For me? Never a red card,” he said. Former officials questioned whether slow-motion replays had influenced the decision unduly. Regardless, USA now had 26 minutes to protect a one-goal lead with ten men.
Rather than panic, they organised. Pochettino reshaped into a 4-4-1 block, with players holding discipline and closing down every passing lane Bosnia attempted to exploit. Bosnia finished with 0.25 expected goals across the entire match, which confirmed how little genuine danger they created despite having the numerical advantage for over 25 minutes.
Tillman Seals It With a Free Kick for the Ages
Sergiño Dest won a free kick 25 yards from goal in the 82nd minute after Stjepan Radeljic pulled him back. Tillman floated his effort through a wall of defenders, leaving the crowd of 68,827 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium absolutely stunned. Vasilj got a touch but could not keep it out.
Tillman became only the second American on record to score a direct free kick at a World Cup, after Eric Wynalda against Switzerland in 1994. USA have now scored four set-piece goals at this World Cup, more than any other team remaining in the tournament. Tillman was clear about what motivated him. “Keep going. Keep fighting,” he told reporters. “I think this game today showed our character.”

Belgium Await Without Balogun
Balogun will miss Monday’s Round of 16 tie through suspension. Defender Chris Richards acknowledged the difficulty plainly. “Ultimately we’re going to miss him for the next game,” he said, “but we know that if it’s Pepe or Haji or whoever steps up next, they’re going to do their job just as well as he did.”
Belgium beat Senegal to advance from their side of the draw. They eliminated USA at the 2014 Round of 16 with a 2-1 win in extra time. America will know that history and will not want to revisit it. Still, a team that won a knockout World Cup match while playing over 25 minutes with ten men has earned the right to believe. Seattle on Monday is next. After Santa Clara, nothing about this USA side should be underestimated.
