INTRODUCTION
The concept of origin in Economics refers to the point where the horizontal axis (X-axis) and the vertical axis (Y-axis) intersect on a graph. It is represented by the letter O and has a value of zero on both axes, meaning no quantity or value has been measured at that point. In utility theory, the origin serves as the starting point for plotting graphs such as utility curves, indifference curves, and demand curves. It helps economists and students understand the relationship between variables such as quantity consumed and utility gained. For example, in a graph showing utility against quantity consumed, the origin indicates that no goods have been consumed and therefore no utility has been derived. Thus, the concept of origin is important because it provides a reference point for measuring and interpreting economic data on graphs.

UTILITY MAXIMIZATION
Utility maximisation is the process by which a consumer uses limited income to obtain the highest possible level of satisfaction from the goods and services purchased. A rational consumer seeks to allocate spending in a way that provides the greatest benefit from every unit of money spent. According to utility theory, a consumer reaches maximum satisfaction or equilibrium when the marginal utility gained per unit of money spent on different goods is equal. This is expressed mathematically as MUx/Px = MUy/Py, where MU represents marginal utility and P represents price. For example, a student with limited pocket money may decide how much to spend on snacks and drinks in such a way that the satisfaction gained from the last naira spent on each item is equal. Utility maximisation helps explain consumer choice, demand patterns, and how people make purchasing decisions under conditions of scarcity.
DERIVATION OF DEMAND AND DEMAND CURVE FROM UTILITY THEORY
The derivation of demand and demand curve from utility theory explains how a consumer’s desire to maximise satisfaction influences the quantity of goods purchased at different prices. According to utility theory, a consumer continues to buy a commodity as long as the satisfaction gained from consuming an additional unit, known as marginal utility, is equal to or greater than the price paid for it. Since the law of diminishing marginal utility states that the additional satisfaction from consuming more units of a good gradually decreases, consumers will only be willing to buy extra units if the price falls. For example, a student may buy only one bottle of juice when the price is high, but if the price reduces, the student may buy more because the lower price matches the lower satisfaction gained from additional bottles. This relationship between falling prices and increasing quantity demanded gives rise to the demand curve, which slopes downwards from left to right, showing that as price decreases, quantity demanded increases.
CONSUMER’S SURPLUS
Consumer’s surplus is the difference between what a consumer is willing to pay for a good or service and what they actually pay in the market. It shows the extra satisfaction or benefit the consumer gains from paying less than the value they place on the product. For example, if a student is willing to pay ₦2,000 for a textbook but buys it for ₦1,500, the consumer’s surplus is ₦500. This idea is important in economics because it helps to measure the welfare or gain of consumers from market transactions. When prices are low, consumer surplus increases, and when prices rise, it reduces.

The concept of indifference curves explains consumer choice between different combinations of two goods that give the same level of satisfaction. It shows that a consumer can prefer one bundle of goods or another bundle, yet still feel equally satisfied, so they are indifferent between them. For example, a combination of more food and less drink may give the same satisfaction as another combination of less food and more drink. When these combinations are plotted on a graph, they form a curve called an indifference curve. The curve slopes downwards from left to right because if a consumer has more of one good, they must have less of the other to remain at the same satisfaction level. Indifference curves do not cross each other, and higher curves represent higher levels of satisfaction than lower ones. They are also usually convex to the origin, showing that consumers are willing to give up fewer units of one good as they get more of it.
