After winning the 2026 King of the Ring Tournament, the newest King, Oba Femi did not just take home a crown – he also took home a prize that is worth more than a king’s ransom: a guaranteed WWE Championship opportunity at the event.
Most of the WWE roster would have loved to have had the opportunity for a “career-defining opportunity.” A King of the Ring championship match, although not the ultimate title itself, always provides a clear shot to the top, opening the door for any superstar looking to elevate themselves into the main event scene. King of the Ring provides that boost and clearly identifies whoWWE sees on top.
However, the latest word out of the WWE locker room suggests that Oba Femi has opted to face a hungry Brock Lesnar in a Hell in a Cell match instead of cashing in on his KOTR entitlement and securing his shot at a WWE Championship.
While it looks like an instant blockbuster matchup, has this potentially become a problematic move for Femi’s future.

What This Meant to Brock Lesner
No one is questioning the power of The Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar. At nearly 50, Lesnar is still among the biggest draws and one of the most imposing presences in the company, despite his limited schedule. His presence automatically amplifies the magnitude of any contest, and a showdown with the up-and-coming Femi would put him in front of audiences that might still need to get acclimated to him, immediately.
Moreover, Lesnar would surely be looking to put a definitive stamp on any opponent he would step inside the squared circle with, for a definitive moment for Oba.
What a Victory Over Brock Lesnar Would Look Like
A victory against Lesnar would certainly put Femi over. However, memorable matches don’t always carry the same value as world championships. This is where the controversy comes in, and where fans may find themselves on opposite sides of this decision.
When a King of the Ring match is awarded, it comes as a prize. Traditionally, it’s awarded to open a doorway for a world championship. For Femi to ignore that opportunity for a feud-based bout, may mean he is skipping out on what was the entire point of winning the tournament.
WWE has obviously groomed Femi to be one of their next main event players, evidenced by his quick rise through the ranks.
His look, power, and ring presence indicate he has what it takes to be on top.
However, throwing him into the abyss of Hell in a Cell against Brock Lesnar has its potential risks. A loss to “The Beast” could be detrimental, especially without the prize of a championship. Momentum, as is in any sport, is a key component. Going into SummerSlam with a King of the Ring title shot would create buzz; taking a major loss may result in Femi’s King of the Ring win fading into the abyss and missing out on his moment at a WWE title opportunity.

WWE Bigger Picture for Oba Femi vs Lesner
WWE obviously has a vision for Oba Femi. The opportunity to build a massive win, the likes of which only Brock Lesnar can deliver, may be what they believe they need to ultimately make Femi a top star. It may be in their best interest to elevate Femi into the main-event discussion first through a major feud, which could make a future WWE Championship win more significant.
Not every star is ready to take the title right away; sometimes they need that one big moment.
Brock Lesnar is the perfect opponent for a landmark win that could propel Femi into that main-event picture, even before he grabs gold.
Even though there is the allure of facing one of the biggest names in the history of wrestling inside of the most brutal stipulation in the WWE, KOTR opportunities don’t grow on trees. For years, fans have seen a dream match draw more money but a championship will cement a legacy. At this point, Femi has already established that he belongs in a marquee match.
However, it begs the question of whether he should have pursued a title over a dream match. Beating Lesnar could create the largest name for Femi in WWE yet, but missing out on his guaranteed shot could put him behind the 8-ball when he actually looks for a championship opportunity.
If he defeats Lesnar, Femi becomes one of WWE’s hottest stars and a certified main-eventer in the eyes of WWE management, creating a storyline where a future world title victory only continues to add to the growing legend. On the flip side, if he is defeated, it is fair to say that decision to forgo the world title shot will be questioned for years to come, particularly if Femi’s stock falters from what he gained at the KOTR Tournament.
Conclusion
Regardless of whether Oba Femi chooses to pursue the Brock Lesnar matchup or secure a shot at the world championship, it will either prove to be a risky but game-changing gamble, or a cautious but perhaps frustrating decision to the WWE universe.
