Deep in Nigeria’s Kebbi State, something magical happens every year that brings thousands of people together for four days of pure excitement! It is called the Argungu Festival.
The Argungu Fishing Festival is one of the most thrilling events in all of Nigeria, where brave fishermen compete to catch the biggest fish using only their hands and traditional tools.
Picture this: drums beating, people singing, and fishermen diving into the Matan Fada River with nothing but traditional nets.
This isn’t just any ordinary fishing trip – it’s a celebration that has been happening for almost 100 years! The festival takes place every year between February and March.
What makes this festival truly special is how it brings communities together. Long ago, two groups of people didn’t get along very well. But through friendship and understanding, they decided to celebrate together instead of fighting.

A Story of Friendship and Peace
The Argungu Festival has a wonderful story behind it. Back in 1925, a kind man named Mallam Hassan Dan-Mu’azu met the Emir of Argungu during his travels. Even though their communities had disagreements for over 100 years, Hassan decided to visit the Emir and show him respect.
When Hassan became the Sultan of Sokoto in 1931, he visited his friend again in 1934. The Emir organised a grand fishing festival to honour his visitor. This celebration was so successful that both leaders realised something amazing – when people come together to have fun, old arguments fade away.
Exciting Water Adventures
The festival is famous for its water competitions, called “kabanci.” Fishermen show off their skills in canoe racing, paddling as fast as they can across the river. Some brave participants even try to catch wild ducks with their bare hands.
People also swim whilst balancing clay pots on their heads or floating on large gourds. These competitions celebrate traditional skills that local families have passed down for generations. Wrestling and boxing competitions add even more excitement to the celebration.
The Grand Fishing Competition
The biggest event happens on the final day – the grand fishing competition! For one whole hour, thousands of fishermen jump into the Matan Fada River to catch the largest fish they can find. Modern fishing tools aren’t allowed, so everyone must use traditional nets and gourds.
The competition starts when the Homa (the chief fisherman) gives the signal. Then the river becomes alive with splashing and excitement! Singers fill the air with traditional songs whilst others shake large gourds to guide fish toward shallow water. In 2005, someone caught a fish so enormous that four men needed to lift it – it weighed 75 kilograms!

Today, the Argungu Festival attracts visitors from all over Nigeria and many other countries. In 2016, UNESCO recognised the festival as an important part of world culture that should be protected forever.
