What would you do if I handed you a wooden computer mouse? Or told you that one of the world’s first webcams was created to check a coffee pot? What if we said that artificial intelligence can now help a robot explore the surface of Mars?

Technology can sometimes feel like something that has always existed. We have smartphones, tablets, computers, video games, smart TVs and countless apps around us every day, but surprisingly, many of the technologies we now take for granted started in simple and maybe funny ways.

This week’s theme is Digital Kids, so let us take a quick journey through the fascinating world of technology and discover three real facts that might make you look at your gadgets differently.

Did You Know? The First Computer Mouse Was Made of Wood!

Take a look at the computer mouse in front of you. It probably has a smooth plastic body, buttons and perhaps even a light underneath it.

The very first computer mouse looked nothing like that. The prototype created by engineer Bill English at the Stanford Research Institute around 1964 was made from wood. It used mechanical wheels to detect movement and had space for just one button. The device was part of the pioneering computer work led by Douglas Engelbart.

So why was it called a “mouse”? The name came from its appearance and the cord that came out of the back, which reminded people of a small mouse with a tail. Isn’t that fascinating?

Today’s computer mice are much more advanced, but the basic idea remains familiar: you move the mouse, and the computer follows that movement on the screen. It is interesting to think about how technology changes over time: a device that began as a small wooden prototype eventually became one of the most common computer accessories in the world.

Did You Know? One of the World’s First Webcams Was Used to Watch a Coffee Pot!

Now, here’s something also much interesting that might just leave you beautifully captivated: imagine setting up a camera for one very important reason – to find out whether there was coffee left in a pot!

That is more or less what happened at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. In 1991, researchers in the Cambridge Computer Laboratory created a camera system that watched a coffee pot downstairs from their offices. Why? They wanted people working in the laboratory to be able to check the coffee pot from their computers instead of walking downstairs only to discover that it was empty.

The image of the coffee pot was displayed on the researchers’ computers, allowing them to see whether fresh coffee was available. The camera was later connected to the World Wide Web in 1993, allowing people outside the laboratory to see the image too. The University of Cambridge describes it as the world’s first webcam.

Now pause to think about that! One of the early uses of webcam technology was not a video meeting, online classroom or social media livestream, it was simply checking a coffee pot. This is a great example of how technology can begin with a very ordinary problem. Someone had a problem – “Do I need to walk downstairs to check the coffee?” and a technological solution followed.

Did You Know? Artificial Intelligence Can Help a Robot Drive on Mars!

When you hear the words artificial intelligence, you might think about chatbots, robots or futuristic movies. The real deal is that AI is already being used for actual scientific work far beyond Earth.

NASA says its Perseverance rover, which is exploring Mars, uses artificial intelligence to help it drive autonomously. The rover can take pictures of the ground, identify obstacles and choose a safe path as it travels across the Martian surface. This is a pretty amazing development when you settle down to think about it.

Mars is millions of kilometres away from our planet, Earth, so scientists cannot simply grab a joystick and control every movement of the rover in real time. Communication between Earth and Mars takes time. Instead, the rover has systems that allow it to make certain decisions about how to move through its surroundings.

NASA also uses AI and machine learning to study enormous amounts of information collected from space. In one example, machine learning helped researchers identify a previously missed planet in data from NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope.

This shows that artificial intelligence is not only about entertainment or chatting with a computer, it can also be a tool for exploration, science, problem-solving and much more you can think.

Perhaps the wooden computer mouse made you laugh. Maybe the coffee-pot webcam made you wonder why anyone would go to such lengths just to check coffee. Or perhaps the idea of an AI-powered rover driving across Mars caught your attention.

There is something interesting connecting all three stories: technology usually begins with people trying to solve problems, curious-driven, explore new possibilities or make something work better.

The first computer mouse was an experimental solution for interacting with computers. The Cambridge webcam helped researchers solve a very simple everyday problem. NASA’s use of AI helps scientists and engineers deal with challenges involved in exploring places that humans cannot easily reach. The amazing thing again is that technology continues to change. The smartphone you use today would have seemed almost unbelievable to someone living decades ago, and the same thing may happen with the technology you see in the future.

Perhaps today’s children will grow up to design smarter robots, discover new ways of using artificial intelligence, create safer online spaces or invent devices that we cannot even imagine yet. That is one reason learning about technology matters.

You do not have to know everything about computers before you can start exploring the digital world. You can begin by asking questions, trying new things, learning how everyday devices work and thinking about problems that technology could help solve.
