Madonna University Faces Fresh Pressure to Reverse Nursing Student's Expulsion Over Viral Video.

Madonna University faces fresh pressure to reverse the expulsion of a final-year nursing student over a viral dance video, with student bodies and a human rights group now calling for a review. The university also suspended 14 other nursing students involved in the clip.

The case has sparked debate about professional conduct, student discipline and the fairness of the punishment. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) first appealed for clemency. Amnesty International has since called for the sanctions to be reviewed.

The matter unfolded on the Elele campus of Madonna University in Rivers State, where a video showed nursing students performing dance routines at several spots around the school grounds, among them its teaching hospital.

Madonna University Saga: What Happened in the Viral Video?

The video showed nursing students participating in an online trend popular among healthcare workers, accompanied by the caption: “No fall sick o, na Gen Z full hospital now.”

The clip showed students dancing in a hospital waiting area, on a staircase, and inside a bus. A short clip of the video shared on X reportedly showed about 1.7 million viewers.

The video drew criticism because it was recorded within a teaching hospital. Hospitals require discipline and respect for patients. Students working in clinical environments must also understand professional boundaries.

Chima Achu, Director of Communications and Public Affairs at the institution, confirmed that the footage was shot within the teaching hospital. At first, he told reporters that the management team was putting together an official reply.

News of the school's disciplinary measures emerged afterwards. Reports indicate that the nursing student who was expelled is Mercy, who studies at 500 level and is the person seen at the start of the video.

Student Expelled, 14 More Suspended

Reports initially caused confusion about the number of students expelled. Subsequent reports clarified that one student was expelled, while 14 others received suspension letters.

The sanctions have raised questions about how the university reached its decision. In particular, the public has not been given a detailed explanation of why Mercy received a more severe punishment than the other students.

The university has not been publicly reported to have explained the specific factors behind the different sanctions. It would therefore be premature to conclude why management treated the students differently.

The distinction matters because the affected students were reportedly in their final year. Mercy’s expulsion could interrupt years of study and delay her entry into the nursing profession.

NANS Appeals for Mercy, the Expelled Student

The National Association of Nigerian Students has asked Madonna University to reconsider its decision.

NANS, in a statement signed by its president, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, called the students' behaviour improper. The association accepted that what they did fell short of the standard expected of those training as nurses.

Even so, the body contended that an expulsion might gravely affect the education and future careers of those involved, and it appealed to the university to drop the expulsion in favour of a firm warning.

NANS did not ask the university to ignore the incident. Instead, it called for a punishment that would correct the students’ behaviour without ending their academic progress.

The association’s position highlights a difficult question. How should universities balance discipline with the opportunity for students to learn from mistakes? NANS believes the university should consider the long-term effects of its decision. It has maintained its appeal for clemency. Read NANS’ statement here.

How Madonna University Faces Fresh Pressure from NUNSA and Amnesty International

The Nigerian Universities Nursing Students’ Association (NUNSA) has also intervened. Its national leadership said it had begun engaging relevant stakeholders and Madonna University’s management.

In a statement dated 3 October 2026, NUNSA acknowledged the expulsion of one student and the suspension of 14 others. It called for dialogue and a fair review of the disciplinary measures.

The association also recognised the need to protect the welfare of nursing students while maintaining professional standards. Its intervention adds another voice to efforts to resolve the dispute.

Amnesty International has since urged Madonna University to overturn the expulsion and look again at the suspensions, calling the sanctions disproportionate. The rights group asked the institution to think about dialogue and mediation instead.

Amnesty also raised concerns about the students’ rights to education and freedom of expression. It called for university disciplinary policies to comply with international human rights standards.

These interventions have widened the discussion. The issue is no longer only about a viral video. It is also about how institutions enforce rules and determine appropriate penalties.

Madonna University: Why Professional Conduct Still Matters

Calls for leniency do not mean that the students’ behaviours should be ignored. Nursing students are preparing for a profession that demands responsibility, sound judgement and respect for patients.

A teaching hospital is a sensitive environment. Patients may be worried, unwell or in need of urgent care. Staff and students must respect their privacy and avoid activities that could interfere with hospital operations.

However, the available reports do not establish that patients were exposed in the video or that patient care was disrupted. Those claims should not be presented as confirmed facts.

Clear rules on recording and sharing material from clinical environments should be issued by universities. Students, for their part, must grasp how what they post online may shake public confidence in healthcare workers.

At the same time, disciplinary decisions should be transparent. Institutions should explain the rules involved, the process followed and the reasons for serious penalties. This can help students understand the consequences of misconduct.

Has Madonna University Reconsidered Its Decision?

As of 17 October 2026, reports available publicly confirm the initial sanctions and the appeals by NANS, NUNSA and Amnesty International. I could not verify a later public statement from Madonna University announcing that it had reversed or changed the sanctions.

The university’s communications director had earlier said management would issue an official response. However, the public reports reviewed for this update did not establish whether a subsequent statement was released.

The university’s current position therefore remains unclear from the available public information. It would be inaccurate to say that Mercy has been reinstated or that the sanctions have been withdrawn.

A Chance to Balance Discipline and Fairness

The case of the Madonna University nursing student raises questions that extend beyond one student and one video. Universities must maintain professional standards, especially in programmes involving patient care. Students must also understand that their actions can carry serious consequences.

But discipline should be fair, consistent, and proportionate. A review would allow the university to consider the circumstances and explain its decision more clearly.

For Mercy and the 14 suspended students, the outcome could affect their education and professional plans. For the university, the case presents an opportunity to demonstrate how it balances accountability with fairness.

Summary of where things stand:
• A single final-year nursing student has been expelled, while 14 more have been suspended.
• NANS, NUNSA and Amnesty International have each urged a review.
• Nothing verified so far shows the university has publicly confirmed a reversal.

The immediate question is whether management will respond as Madonna University faces fresh pressure to review its decision. Until a verified decision is announced, the final outcome remains uncertain.
