Passion vs money is a choice many people face at some point: what deserves your time, energy and commitment, or what simply pays the bills. You might have faced it already or may be yet to. Either way, this is for you.

The choice between what you love and what puts food on the table can be quite tough, and having to make a choice at all seems unfair. If what gives you financial security excites you, then you've basically hit the jackpot. However, if you have to choose between what excites you and what gives you financial freedom, here lies the problem.

We often hear people say, “Follow your passion and the money will come.” It is a very inspiring idea that encourages you to pursue your interests, develop your talents and build a life around what gives you a sense of purpose. But what happens when the money doesn't come? What happens when the thing you love and are zealous about can't pay your bills, support your family or even sustain the life that you envision for yourself?

The Case for Following the Money

Then comes the other advice, which says to follow the money. That is, choose a career that seems more secure. Take the job that pays more, even if it doesn't particularly make butterflies turn in your belly. The mindset here is to pursue opportunities that offer financial security.

However, what they don't tell you is that what looks impressive on paper can feel unfulfilling. Likewise, what feels like financial freedom can make you dread Mondays.

Perhaps the question isn't money versus passion. Perhaps it is something else entirely.

Passion vs Money: A Different Narrative

What if the choice does not have to be permanent?

You may think you must choose the money, or choose the passion, pick a path and commit to it. However, you forget that careers, interests, responsibilities and even ambitions evolve.

Take, for instance, someone who works in finance while learning photography on weekends. Initially, photography is just an interest. Over time, they develop the skills, build a portfolio, attract paying clients, all while keeping their finance job and shooting only at weekends, and slowly learning what the business actually requires.

This journey doesn't follow the narrative of following the money or following your passion. Simply, they have used one to explore the other. There is room to do several things:

  • experiment
  • acquire skills
  • build financial resources
  • test assumptions
  • change direction if necessary

An Unexpected Outcome

Maybe, just maybe, the most difficult part of choosing between money and passion is that neither guarantees the life that you imagine.

Passion can lead to fulfilment, but it can also lead to disappointment. Although money can provide stability, it cannot guarantee contentment. Choosing one may involve sacrificing something valuable, while choosing both may require compromises that neither option initially seemed to demand.

Perhaps the most revealing stories are not always those of people who became wealthy by following their passion or successful by following money. They are the stories of people who, at different stages of their lives, had to rethink what success meant to them.

The answer that made sense at twenty-two may not make sense at thirty-five. What matters during a season of survival may differ from what matters during a season of growth. Likewise, what looks like sacrifice from the outside may be an entirely intentional choice to someone who understands what they are working towards.

The more you consider these possibilities, the less the original dilemma looks like a simple either-or.

Final Thought

If money can buy the freedom to pursue your passion but pursuing your passion may require sacrificing financial security, where does one end and the other begin?

When you look at the life you are building today, are you pursuing what you genuinely value or what you believe you ought to value?

Once you are clear on this, the choice may feel less like a source of anxiety.
