TETFund innovation hubs are to be built in 45 higher education institutions across all six regions of Nigeria, The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has said. The hubs are meant to strengthen research, foster innovation and back the country's development, giving researchers a place to build prototypes.
Arc. Sonny Echono, TETFund's Executive Secretary, made the announcement in Abuja as the Research for Impact (R4i) programme drew to a close. Arc. Babatunde Olajide, the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, represented him at the event.
What the R4i programme sets out to do
Run jointly with Innov8 Technology Hub, the initiative seeks to give researchers and academics the skills to come up with workable answers to problems facing society.
Echono said the scheme fits TETFund's strategy of strengthening the research and innovation capacity of universities, polytechnics and colleges, and of driving lasting growth in the economy through innovations developed within the country.
Several prototypes had come out of earlier cohorts, he pointed out, and a few of them had been patented. He voiced hope that this year's participants would deliver comparable outcomes.
He also said each institution may now put forward four nominees, up from a single one when the programme began. The change is meant to:
- gather researchers with complementary scientific backgrounds;
- foster collaboration;
- help with the mentoring of up-and-coming scholars.

How the TETFund innovation hubs will support researchers
According to Echono, the innovation hubs that are being planned would supply the facilities and a supportive setting in which participants could carry on with their research, build prototypes and turn their concepts into workable applications.
He further called on the members of Cohort 34 to put into practice what they learnt over the two weeks of intensive training, adding that commercialising the products they have developed would be the focus of the initiative's following stage.
The Executive Secretary restated TETFund's dedication to backing research and innovation, saying that continued cooperation could speed up technological progress in Nigeria.
Innov8 Technology Hub's message to participants
Also addressing the gathering, Innov8 Technology Hub's Deputy General Manager, Deji Ige, praised TETFund for putting money into research and the country's development.
According to Ige, the partnership is a show of what can be done when institutions pool their efforts to spur innovation. He described the R4i initiative as a chance for academics to convert their research concepts into practical solutions, fresh products and businesses capable of making money.
He urged the participants to treat failure as a normal part of innovating and to keep up the connections they made during the programme.
According to Ige, Nigerian researchers given enough money, tools, specialist know-how and guidance would be able to build technologies that compete, set up businesses and help the economy grow.
The hubs being planned are meant to help turn university and college research into workable solutions, build up the research strength of the institutions, and open routes to bringing home-grown technologies to market. For researchers in the 45 institutions, the TETFund innovation hubs could become the place where prototypes are built and tested.

By bridging the gap between academic theory and commercial application, these facilities will empower local scholars to transform bold ideas into market-ready ventures.
As Nigeria continues to prioritise technology-driven growth, this massive infrastructure expansion signals a transformative shift one that positions domestic higher education institutions as pivotal engines for national development, economic diversification, and sustainable technological advancement.
