A lot unfolds at Mirage Estate in Ordinary People Episode 5, as tensions rise and new developments keep viewers guessing.

Ordinary People episode 5 sees Osaro leave Emilia while Audrey remains trapped with Pere, and it matters because the episode asks what we owe people whose private lives are nothing like their public image.

I don't know whether to be angry, heartbroken or simply ask the writers what exactly they want us to feel. Both stories are a lot to take in.

Pere and Audrey: The man the public never sees

Let's start with Pere and Audrey.

Pere is a comedian, a man whose job is to make people laugh. Outside his home, he can maintain the image of a charming, entertaining man. But behind closed doors, Audrey experiences a very different version of the husband everyone else gets to enjoy.

And Audrey? She comes across as beautiful, confident and strong. Which makes you wonder how a woman who appears to have so much going for her ended up in a marriage like this. But that question is also a reminder that abuse does not discriminate. You cannot always tell what someone is enduring simply by looking at them.

Osaro and Emilia Daniel: A breaking point

Then there is Osaro and Emilia Daniel.

Emilia is an actress battling serious personal struggles, while Osaro has been trying to live with the reality of their relationship. Watching him reach his breaking point raises an uncomfortable question: how much can one person endure before they finally decide they have had enough?

By Ordinary People episode 5, Osaro makes his decision and leaves.

But what follows is heartbreaking. Emilia's reaction to his departure takes a tragic turn, leaving viewers to confront the devastating consequences of a relationship that has reached its breaking point.

It is difficult to watch because, beyond the drama, there are human beings struggling in situations that have become too much for them to handle. Osaro's decision to leave does not automatically make him a villain, just as Emilia's struggles do not make her pain any less real.

Are the men in Ordinary People episode 5 the problem?

Audrey's story makes the situation even more complicated. While one husband finally walks away, another has made his wife's life a nightmare behind the very image that makes people admire him.

So, what exactly are we supposed to make of these men? The episode sets out three things side by side:

  • One man has reached his limit and leaves.
  • Another continues to hurt the woman who should be safest with him.
  • The women caught in these relationships are left dealing with consequences that go far beyond what outsiders can see.

I won't lie; this episode had me thinking, aren't men truly scum?. But perhaps the bigger point is that the image people project to the world can be dangerously different from who they are in private.

That is the question Ordinary People episode 5 leaves hanging: whether we judge people by the face they show in public or by what happens behind their front doors. The show does not hand us an easy answer, and I think that is deliberate.

Mirage Estate and the halfway mark

Mirage Estate is supposed to be a place where people live peacefully. Instead, behind those beautiful houses are relationships falling apart, secrets waiting to surface and people struggling in ways their neighbours may never understand.

And somehow, we are only halfway through the series. With the second half still to come, there is plenty of room for these secrets to surface and for the people involved to face what they have been hiding.

Have you watched episode five? What do you think about Osaro's decision to leave, and can Pere's public image ever be separated from the man Audrey knows behind closed doors?
