Agbara Nla: The Return Hits ₦408.3m at Box Office
The faith-based movie continues its impressive cinema run, proving that Christian stories can also attract major box-office numbers.
Nollywood’s box office has another major talking point, and this time, it is a faith-based film.
Agbara Nla: The Return has grossed ₦408.3 million at the Nigerian box office, making it the second-highest-grossing Nollywood film released in 2026, according to figures announced by its distributor, Nile Entertainment.
The milestone was announced on Monday, October 26, as the film continued to draw audiences to cinemas across the country. The distributor celebrated the achievement on social media, declaring that the movie had made ₦408.3 million and was still making history.
For a film rooted in Christian storytelling, the achievement is significant. It shows that faith-based productions can compete for the attention of cinema audiences in a market where commercial success is often associated with big-name actors, elaborate productions and mainstream entertainment.
From a Christian classic to a cinema success
Directed by Damilola Mike-Bamiloye, Agbara Nla: The Return is a remake of the Christian film classic originally produced by Mount Zion Film Productions more than three decades ago.
The new production brings a familiar title back to the screen for a new generation of viewers while giving audiences who remember the original an opportunity to reconnect with the story.
Here is how the film reached audiences:
- It was co-produced by Mount Zion Film Productions, Sozo Films and Circuits.
- Nile Entertainment handled its Nigerian distribution.
- Its international distribution in Europe was undertaken in partnership with IFEC.
- It arrived in Nigerian cinemas on October 1, 2026, and has continued to record impressive numbers since its release.
According to reports, it also earned $120,660 during its opening weekend in selected cinemas in the United Kingdom and Canada.
Four consecutive weekends at No. 1 for Agbara Nla: The Return
Nile Entertainment said the film had held the number-one position for four consecutive weekends, highlighting its sustained performance beyond its opening.
The distributor also described the movie as the highest-grossing faith-based title of all time and the highest-grossing film ever released in October, according to promotional materials accompanying its announcement.
Its latest ₦408.3 million total represents an increase of ₦53.8 million from the previously reported ₦354.5 million.
That growth suggests the film's cinema run has not slowed to a halt, with screenings continuing nationwide at the time of the announcement.
Only one Nollywood film is ahead
Despite its impressive performance, Agbara Nla: The Return still has one major title ahead of it.
Call of My Life, directed by Blessing Uzzi, remains the highest-grossing Nollywood film released in 2026, with earnings exceeding ₦900 million, according to published box-office reports.
The gap between the two films is substantial, but Agbara Nla: The Return has already secured a place among the year's biggest Nigerian cinema releases.
Its performance also adds to the growing conversation about the commercial potential of faith-based films and the audiences willing to pay to see stories shaped by their beliefs and values.
What this means for Nollywood
The success of Agbara Nla: The Return is worth watching for more than its box-office total.
For years, faith-based productions have built loyal audiences through church screenings, home video releases and dedicated Christian entertainment networks. A strong cinema performance offers another route for these stories to reach viewers beyond their traditional audience.
It also sends a message to filmmakers and distributors: stories do not necessarily have to follow conventional mainstream formulas to attract a large audience.
Of course, one successful film does not automatically guarantee that every faith-based production will achieve similar results. Marketing, distribution, production quality, audience interest and the availability of cinema screenings all play a role in a film's performance.
Still, crossing the ₦400 million mark is a notable achievement for Agbara Nla: The Return.
With the film reportedly still showing in cinemas, its final box-office total remains to be seen. For now, it has become one of Nollywood's biggest success stories of 2026, and its journey could encourage more investment in Nigerian faith-based cinema.
