Spain dismantled Saudi Arabia 4-0 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on Sunday, 21 June 2026, answering every question raised about their attack in the most emphatic way possible.
Kicking off at 10:00 PM WAT, Lamine Yamal scored his first World Cup goal in the 10th minute. Mikel Oyarzabal added two more in the space of three minutes before half-time, and Hassan Altambakti’s own goal completed the rout in the 49th minute.
Three goals in the opening 25 minutes. A 65% share of possession. An xG of 2.30 against Saudi Arabia’s 0.14. Spain did not just win. They made a statement.
Furthermore, the context matters. Spain had spent the week absorbing criticism after a deeply frustrating 0-0 draw with Cape Verde in their Matchday One opener. Oyarzabal, meanwhile, became only the second player on record to register three direct goal involvements in the opening 25 minutes of a World Cup game, after Hungary’s Laszlo Fazekas against El Salvador in 1982. Not bad for a side written off as toothless just five days ago.

Yamal Opens the Floodgates
De la Fuente made four changes from the Cape Verde game, with Yamal, Oyarzabal, Baena, and Porro all starting. The tactical intent was clear from the first minute. Spain pressed high, moved quickly, and attacked with a directness that had been entirely absent against Cape Verde.
Yamal got on the ball early and caused Saudi Arabia’s left side problems from the first minute. In the 10th minute, Oyarzabal drove down the left and clipped a low cross that evaded Al-Tambakti before reaching Yamal at the far post.
The teenager steered the ball home from close range without breaking stride. Yamal had his first World Cup goal, and Spain had their first of the tournament.
Oyarzabal was unstoppable after that. Following a corner-kick in the 21st minute, the ball bounced towards him via Laporte’s header, and he bundled it into the right side of the net. Just three minutes later, Dani Olmo flicked the ball across the box, and Oyarzabal swept home his second at the far post. Saudi Arabia had no answer.
By the 27th minute, Spain had become the first team to score three goals inside the opening 25 minutes of a World Cup match since Germany did so in 2014. The parallel is worth noting.
Second Half Seals the Deal
Spain protected Yamal and Oyarzabal by substituting both at half-time. Despite the personnel change, the pattern continued after the break.
Marc Cucurella drove forward and tested Al-Owais in the 49th minute, whose save rebounded directly off Al-Tambakti and into the net for Spain’s fourth. Unfortunately, the own goal accurately reflected the chaos Saudi Arabia were experiencing.
Ferran Torres, introduced at half time, went close to a fifth but dragged his shot wide. Later, a Torres goal was ruled out for offside by VAR in stoppage time, though by that point the match had long been decided.
Saudi Arabia registered their only effort on target through Al-Hamdan with ten minutes left, which prompted a wry smile from the commentators rather than any genuine concern.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, remain on one point and need a positive result against Cape Verde in Houston on the same day. Their task is difficult but not impossible. Whether Georgios Donis’ side can produce the kind of defensive performance that Cape Verde managed against Spain on Matchday One is the key question heading into the final round of Group H fixtures.
As for Spain, Atlanta put the doubts to bed completely. Yamal is fit, Oyarzabal is lethal, and this side are now playing with the freedom of a team that knows exactly what it can do when the attack clicks. Uruguay had better be ready.
