With the global threat still alarming, Zoom video communications is becoming popular.
Zoom is a US-based remote conferencing service that allows for video conferencing, online meetings, mobile collaborations and chat.
As most businesses in Nigeria are shifting their services online, Zoom has become the platform of choice for online meetings.
This free service provides users a randomly generated ID, which is used to join a call. It offers free, 40 minutes of conference calling for up to 100 attendees.
Although Zoom has been used in Nigeria for while now, its present usage would be significant, bringing the question of how secured the service is.
Zoom’s major downside would be that its ‘Company Directory’ setting, has the potential to leak emails and photos of users. As well, privacy has been a big issue with Zoom. This has led the company to declare a 90 day freeze on releasing new features, so as to stay focused on fixing privacy and security issues.
Another Challenge Zoom faces is “zWarDial” , an automated tool developed by security researchers, which can retrieve 100 meeting IDs per hour.
When uninvited users join a meeting (usually spammers), they disrupt the flow of the meeting by dropping offensive materials, thereby prolonging the meeting.
However, zWarDial can only find meetings that come with default passwords from Zoom, It can’t find password-protected meetings.
According to Zoom, passwords are set by default for new meetings. Therefore, to ensure the meeting is locked out from intruders, passwords should be set.
Zoom’s ease of use and simplicity has made it quite popular in the market. It is supported on Android, iOS, and Web.
