MTN Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest provider of communication services, kicks off today in celebration of 19 years of operation.

The Company, through its Twitter handle, appreciated Nigerians for their support by which MTN had graced to live and will build dreams.

MTN 19 Years

In the spirit of anniversary, MTN wrote a emotional piece in a poetic style that emphasises much on the value of customers in its operations:

“As toddlers, we came

with big dreams and tentative steps

We tried to run and stumbled

But we were never alone

YOU held us

When we worried

YOU said ‘farabale’

When we got things right

YOU said ‘jisi ike’

When we missed a step

You said ‘hankali’

YOU taught us

And here we are

Nineteen

Stronger, Better, Brightening lives

This legacy

This Journey

This celebration

This story is incomplete

without YOU

We exist because of YOU

Cheers to the many dreams we’ve lived and will build together.”

Looking at MTN’s attempt at poetry, we can’t help but notice how the the company unifies the languages of the three major tribes in Nigeria – Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa.

As well, we can clearly see how MTN stresses on “You”, which goes a long way to speak for the company’s fondness of customers.

MTN Nigeria started commercial operations in 2001, and since then, the Network has made remarkable success. The company holds the largest share of the mobile market, with total mobile subscribers being over 71 Million.

After ECONET launched GSM in Nigeria on the 6th of August, 2001. MTN Nigeria followed suit almost immediately.

The Network, on May 16, 2001, became the first GSM network to make a call following the globally lauded Nigerian GSM auction conducted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) earlier in the year.

Thereafter, MTN launched full commercial operations beginning with Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.
