Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has scheduled a meeting with ASUU today, in his office.
The meeting, to commence by 1pm, is an effort by the Federal Government to allay the strike, recently enacted by ASUU on 14th of February 2022.
ASUU had, on February 14 declared strike for an initial 4 week period due to the Federal Government’s unresponsiveness to their demands.
Speaking on this, the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Charles Akpan, confirmed that Chris Ngige will meet with the executives of the union and other relevant government agencies.
Also, in response to ASUU strike, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) recently threatened to block Federal roads nationwide. The association gave the Federal Government one week to resolve its dissensions with ASUU or risk a national mass action by Nigerian Students.
The President of NANS, Sunday Asefon declared this in a statement in Sokoto shortly after signing the reviewed Constitution of the association at the Sokoto state government house.
According to Asefon, NANS won’t watch as the government destroy the tertiary education.
“Nigerian students can’t continue to pay for sins we never committed as we are paying for our education.
“We strongly believe that we deserve the best. At the end of every industrial action, ASUU members are paid their salaries; likewise, government officials in charge of education supervision get their pay.
“It’s only Nigeria students that get nothing, but a waste of everything, the house rent is non-refundable and the age count is irreversible,” he said.
