Peer pressure is particular to adolescence stage and comes by choice afterwards. It is a desire to emulate children within your level, or live like them.

From experience, peer pressure can come from comparison with another child. It can be of two types; Positive and Negative.

The positive peer pressure comes from the activities that make you strive for doing good. They include helping people around you, reading good books, respecting the elders etc.

On the other hand, negative peer pressure evolves from bad influence which include: smoking, bullying, drinking, skipping classes etc.

Nowadays, children try to compare themselves to other kids around without so much as to care about how it influences them.

Every child or student will be exposed to either positive peer pressure or negative peer pressure, but it how they respond that matters. Good upbringing, proper conduct, the right association, and following rules and regulations go a long way fomenting positive peer pressure.

Also, parents and community have large roles to play, because there are important factors to be considered when peer pressure is being discussed.

A parent who habitually compares a child with another, is creating an avenue for the child to imitate the other person’s character. Such child will now go out to borrow bad habits from other children so as to seem fit. This can cause low self-esteem.

By exposure, the community can play their role in causing peer pressure because certain factors such as social status, variety of flavors, thuggery, and misdemeanor form their immediate environment, and can influence them

Now Parents should advice their children to walk with the right peers. Children, be watchful of the type of peers you keep to avoid picking bad habits.
