In life, it isn’t possible to have perfect relationship with anyone without having little altercations here and there.
However, that does not mean, the relationship of any form or kind will have to end abruptly. Faults and mistakes will always show up but there is one thing that can help us to keep on standing. One thing that can also help bring overall growth and development to society because the people living in that society, state, or community tend to have a good relationship with one another.
That thing is a unique and very impressive trait and virtue. It is the ability and willingness to allow the existence, occurrence, or practice of something that one dislikes to disagree with or without interference. It is Tolerance.
Most of the time, it may be quite difficult to put up with the behaviours of some persons, but then to maintain peaceful co-existence, it is highly important that one just has to be tolerant. We definitely and certainly can’t satisfy everyone. Hence, to tolerate people, we need to understand some things.
Diversity is unavoidably a very important inevitable and distinguishing feature of the human condition. We should come to terms to understand that everyone is different. Even identical twins formed from the same egg (ovum) despite how difficult it may be to distinguish them, there will still be striking factors that will make one different from the other.
Also, we don’t have to retaliate or respond unnecessarily to naysayers or toxic words from toxic people. Responding to them will only cause us pain and resentment. Hence as tolerant people, the best we can do is to tactfully handle the situation by ignoring them, being calm, and being happy. This act alone will send a message to the toxic person making him or her know who acted more responsibly and more mature. It is a responsible act of silence that will confuse and belittle the person.
Much more, we should also learn to forgive and let go of mistakes and faults. This was initially stated. As I said earlier, nobody is perfect. Everybody has a flaw, therefore we can make mistakes at any time.
Humans are embodiments of imperfection so rather than being rash and constantly belittling a person because of a mistake, forgive and let go. Accept it as a part of life and move on happily with little or no regrets. Furthermore, a tolerant person must respect the right and views of other people. Regardless of class or status, everybody must be treated fairly. Nobody’s right is being infringed. Respect other people’s views and opinions. In this way, we are being tolerant.
Most of the time, our inability to come to an understanding of the true personality of people makes us sometimes misunderstand them, thereby not tolerating them. But then, if only we can be open-minded, have and develop an interest in learning about different people’s personalities and ways of life, we will not only extensively broaden our horizons but also increase the tendency and ability for us to happily understand and accept others for who they are with little or no regrets at all.
Lack of tolerance can lead to conflict, and violence and if it is not carefully controlled or reviewed, the peace and security of the society can be destroyed. Also, this can hinder peaceful co-existence among members of the society which can further affect the overall growth and development of a society.
Tolerance existing in a society can promote peace and unity in the society, which in the end can lead to the overall growth and development of the society. And when this happens there will be a lot of things that will be put in place to better the lives of the members of society.
However, tolerance in a relationship will foster love, understanding, peace, progress, and unity among members
Tolerance as a trait should be part of our lives as it is a unique trait that can make one go far in life. Linda Thompson said and I quote, ”our uniqueness over individuality and our life experience molds us into fascinating beings”.
On a final note, I hope we can embrace the spirit of tolerance. I hope we may all channel our lives to deliver into the deepest resources of our hearts to cultivate an atmosphere of understanding, acceptance, tolerance, and companionship.
Let us take care that while demanding tolerance, we do not become intolerant. Embrace tolerance, peace and progress.
