A Nigerian won a second medal for the country at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Nigeria’s weightlifter Edidiong Joseph Umoafia clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 67kg category on Sunday.
July 30 – Osun resident doctors embark on 72 hours strike
Resident doctors at Osun State University Teaching Hospital embarked on 72 hours strike over the lack of adequate security in the hospital complex.
The resident doctors revealed in a statement after an emergency meeting that the association of resident doctors at the hospital decided to withdraw its service over incessant attacks on the staff of the hospital.

Aug 22 – Falconets Exit U-20 Women’s World Cup Quarter-Final
For the Quarter-Final stage of the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, the Falconets were slated to face their counterparts from the Netherlands.
The clash could be described as well-earned, given that the Falconets had to overturn a 1-0 lead to secure a 3-1 victory over Canada. This followed 1-nil triumphs over France and South Korea; the three victories combined comfortably placed the Falconets atop Group C and in pole position to maintain the momentum against the Netherlands.
Conversely, the Netherlands came in second in Group D behind Japan. The Dutch contingent overturned a 1-nil defeat to eventual group winners Japan to record emphatic victories over the United States and Ghana—3 goals to nothing and 4-1 respectively.
Eventually, the tie ensued in the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium at 1:00 AM WAT+1 on Monday, August 22. Sadly, the Falconets fell 2-0 to the Dutch.

Sept 8 – The Passing of Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle
A recap of the year 2022 would be incomplete without mentioning the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8 at Balmoral Castle. She was aged 96.
Queen Elizabeth II assumed her mantle in 1952 and presided over the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth for seventy years, making her the longest-serving British monarch ever. Under her rule, multiple territories in Africa notably attained their independence and maintained postcolonial relations as part of the Commonwealth.
As a prelude to the Queen’s passing, reports surfaced earlier on the fateful day of the emergency return of Prince Harry to the Balmoral Estate. This came after Buckingham Palace doctors expressed concern over the Queen’s worsening health condition.
