The idea of a renewed leader ushering us into the brighter future we all deserve has been around for so long that it’s no longer news to our ears.
Many have wondered if it’s just a far-fetched fantasy that may never come true.
Nigeria has come a long way with histories rich in potential, bloodshed, betrayal, and unrealized potential.
The nationwide #EndSARS protest in October 2020 signalled the beginning of a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s quest for responsible governance.
Young people rose and took to the streets to demand justice, fairness, and the outlaw of a rogue police unit that has plagued the citizenry since its establishment in 1992.
Despite the government’s hardheaded handling of the protesters, they continue to hold their ground and resist every form of intimidation and oppression.
The protest saw young people rise beyond ethnic, religious, and political affiliations and recognize as one and united Nigeria.
This was to resist the instruments of the state which have continued to jeopardize their future with extra-judicial killings and irresponsible profiling.
The recently concluded presidential election in Nigeria has given the nation renewed hope and optimism. A high level of togetherness and oneness was maintained beyond the protest.
Despite several challenges and setbacks, Nigeria’s journey toward a brighter future inspires and offers a blueprint for other nations facing similar challenges.
The election was not without its challenges. There were reports of violence, voter intimidation, and electoral malpractices.
Howbeit, The election saw a high voter turnout, indicating that Nigerians are eager for change and willing to take ownership of their future.
Transitional Challenges plaguing the nation
This name ”transitional” reflects the idea that many countries, even long after their independence, are still in metamorphosis.
It’s still a process to work to establish stable political systems, build strong economies, and address social and cultural challenges.
It acknowledges that the path to a fully developed and thriving nation is often a long and complex one. That process of evolution, however, is ongoing.
Nigeria has faced several evolving challenges since gaining independence in 1960.
These challenges can be broadly categorized into political, economic, social, and cultural areas.
Here are some of the main challenges:
Political challenges
Nigeria has had a history of military coups and political instability. These have, in their way, hindered the development of stable democratic institutions.
While the country has made progress in recent years, there are still challenges with corruption, electoral fraud, and the use of violence to gain political power.
Economic challenges
Nigeria has a large population and is rich in natural resources. However, the economy has struggled to diversify beyond oil and gas.
The country has also faced challenges with infrastructure, education, and healthcare, which have hindered economic growth and development.
Social challenges
Nigeria is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country. As such, there have been tensions and conflicts between different groups.
There have also been challenges with poverty, inequality, and access to basic services like water, electricity, and healthcare.
Cultural challenges
Nigeria has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. Preserving and promoting this cultural heritage has however been challenging.
There have also been tensions between traditional and modern values, particularly in areas like gender roles and social norms.
These transitional challenges have made it difficult for Nigeria to reach its full potential as a stable, prosperous, and democratic nation.
However, there are also many positive developments taking place. There are economic reforms, improvements in infrastructure and education, and a growing civil society movement, among others.
The new government is mandated to implement policies that will address the nation’s most pressing challenges and transform Nigeria into a prosperous and stable nation.
The government also promises to prioritize economic growth and development.
Summary
The success of the recently concluded election has set the stage for Nigeria’s journey toward redemption and validated that everyone’s vote counts.
This journey will not be without difficulties. However, with the current emergence of a strong leader and patriotic citizens, as well as a clear vision for the future, Nigeria would sour high.
Let us continue to hold our leaders accountable and uphold the law, which is an excellent tool for constructing a stable and prosperous nation.
