Tie and dye refers to a range of resist dyeing techniques and the resulting dyed items achieved through these processes.
The typical tie and dye process involves folding, twisting, pleating, or crumpling fabric or garments.
Following this, the material is bound with string or rubber bands before the application of dye or dyes.
These pre-dye manipulations, known as resists, serve to partially or completely prevent the applied dye from colouring the fabric.
For more intricate tie and dye designs, additional steps may be involved, such as an initial dye application before the resist, sequential dyeing and resist stages, and the incorporation of various types of resists, such as stitching, waxing, stencils, and discharge techniques.
History of Tie and Dye
The history of tie and dye dates back thousands of years, with origins in various cultures around the world. The technique has been employed by different communities, each contributing to the development and popularisation of tie and dye as we recognise it today.
In Asia, for example, tie and dye techniques were used in China and Japan over 6,000 years ago. These early forms were more subdued and often used indigo dyes.
In Japan, the art of tie-dyeing is known as Shibori, which has a history dating back to the 8th century. Japanese artisans developed folding and binding techniques to create unique patterns on fabric.
In West Africa and the Middle East, tie-dyeing techniques were integral to textile traditions. The Yoruba people in Nigeria, for instance, practised a tie and dye method known as Adire.
Meanwhile, tie-dyeing was also prevalent in Iran and India, with the latter introducing vibrant colours and intricate patterns.
Materials Used:
a) Fabric – Natural fibres such as cotton, silk, or wool are commonly used. This allows for easy absorption of the dye and reduces the environmental impact of the production. Pre-washed and pre-shrunk fabric is preferable.
b) Caustic Soda – Caustic soda is an alkali. It is used to open up the fabric structure, easy absorption of dye, and enhance the colour fastness.
c) Hydrosulphide – This is a reducing agent. It is used to prevent the premature oxidation of dye, achieve deep and vibrant colours, remove excess unreacted dyes, and improve the quality of the final colour.
d) Vat Dyes – Vat dyes are a class of dyes known for their ability to natural fibres like cotton. This property makes it commonly used for dyeing.
e) Rubber Gloves – This is used to prevent direct contact of the dye with the hands.
f) Plastic Table Cover – This is used to prevent dye stains on the table.
g) Tablespoon – This is used to measure the quantity of dyes, hydrosulphide, and caustic soda to be used.
h) Big-size Bowls – This is used to pre-wash and dye the fabrics, it has to be big enough to allow for even distribution of the dye.
i) Small-size Bowls – This is used in the preparation of the dye solution.
j) Rubber Bands, Raffia Threads, Threads, or String – Either of these are used to tie parts of the fabric to create patterns.
k) Spray Bottles – These are used to spray dye to different parts of the fabric.
l) Water – Water is essential in the whole production. It is used to prewash the fabric, mix the dyes, dye the fabrics, and wash off the unreacted dyes.
Tools Used:
a) Source of heat (stove, gas, etc.) – A source of heat is required to warm the water for the dye mixing process.
b) Scissors – Scissors are used for cutting the fabric into different shapes and sizes. It is also used to shape the foam in the wax-resist technique.
c) Apron – It is worn to prevent the dye from splattering on your clothes.
d) Kettle – It is useful to boil the water for mixing the dyes.
e) Dyeing Area – This is a well-ventilated space, that allows for easy movement, with easy-to-clean surfaces.
Process Involved in Tie and Dye
Step 1: Prepare the Fabric
Soak the fabric in clean water for 15 minutes. Wash out the fabric and spread it to dry. This makes the fabric absorb the dye better.
Step 2: Tie the Fabric
Using a rubber band, raffia thread, or string, tie parts of the fabric. The process of tying would prevent the dye from penetrating the area. Create patterns by folding, twisting, or crumpling before tying the area. Set the tied fabric aside.
Step 3: Mix the Dyes
Before mixing the chemicals, it is essential to heat the water; using hot or warm water is necessary for blending the dyestuff. Don’t forget to wear your rubber gloves and apron.
To mix the dyes, there is a standard proportion to use, which is 2:1. You mix the hydrosulphide and caustic soda in a ratio of 2:1.
For every 1 tablespoon of caustic soda, you add 2 tablespoons of Hydrosulphide and 2 tablespoons of vat dye.
In a small bowl, mix the caustic soda, hydrosulphide, and dye thoroughly. Gradually pour in the hot water and continue mixing.
Transfer the mixture to a larger bowl and adjust the colour intensity by adding more cold water, depending on whether you prefer a darker or lighter final hue.

Step 4: Dye the Fabric
Submerge the fabric into the dye bath. Leave it to set for about 15 – 20 minutes. Turn the fabric occasionally for it to absorb the dye evenly.
Step 5: Wash and Dry
Remove the fabric from the dye bath and loosen all ties. Spread it out under a shade to oxidise for 25 seconds. Then wash and rinse in clean water. Spread out your washed fabric to dry.
