Opay Digital Services, a leading mobile money firm, has awarded N12 million in scholarships to 40 deserving students at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria. Each student will receive N300,000.
The scholarships were disbursed after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ABU and Opay.
According to Opay’s Managing Director, Mr. Dauda Gotring, an alumnus of ABU, the scholarships are part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives. Opay has a special connection with ABU, which is why they chose to support 40 students from the university, with an additional 20 students from other institutions.
Mr. Gotring emphasized Opay’s commitment to financial inclusion, aligning with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s digital policy. He announced plans to empower women in Zaria through startup programs and commercial initiatives.
ABU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, expressed gratitude to Opay for their generosity, noting that the scholarships will alleviate financial burdens for the beneficiaries. He thanked Opay in advance for their upcoming women’s program and encouraged the recipients to utilize the funds wisely.
The scholarship selection process identified 40 indigent students from a pool of 959, following thorough screening by the University’s Counseling and Human Development Center.
Dignitaries present at the MoU signing included deputy vice-chancellors, professors, and directors from ABU, as well as representatives from Opay.
