The National Identification and Registration Authority (NiRA) has decried the rising level of misinformation and the fragility of online credibility in Nigeria.
Speaking during a Media Advocacy and Capacity Building Workshop held on Thursday, April 16, 2026, and organised by NiRA, Vice Chair of ICANN’s Country Code Names Supporting Organisation (ccNSO), Mr Adebiyi Oladipo, stated that Nigeria and Nigerians are perceived globally based on the information circulating on the internet.
“We can choose positive angles to stories and not always promote negative narratives, because we will ultimately be seen through that lens,” Oladipo said.

He noted that Nigeria’s digital identity, represented by the .ng domain, is a trusted platform where businesses and individuals can promote a positive image of the country and its people.
Oladipo added that the .ng domain is as stable and reliable as other foreign domains widely used by Nigerians, such as .com, .net, .org, and .uk, stressing that it possesses all the necessary infrastructure to perform effectively.
While emphasising that .ng is not an inferior domain, he encouraged Nigerians to build their platforms and businesses on it, adding that increased adoption would further strengthen its value and global recognition.
Also speaking at the workshop, a tech lawyer, Mr Ridwan Badmus (Esq.), delivered a lecture titled “Policy, Regulation and Cybersecurity.”
Badmus explained that Nigeria’s national policy mandates all government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to migrate to the .ng domain. He noted that proper implementation of this policy would give Nigeria a strategic advantage in tackling cybercrime and safeguarding the nation’s digital space.
NiRA also made key commitments during a panel session that featured the President of NiRA, Mr Adesola Akinsanya; Chief Operating Officer, Mrs Oluwaseyi Onasanya; Member of the Executive Board of Directors, Mr Ahmad Mukoshy; Vice Chair of ICANN ccNSO, Mr Adebiyi Oladipo; and tech lawyer, Mr Ridwan Badmus.
During the session, the panelists reaffirmed the security and reliability of the .ng domain and pledged to expand collaboration and partnerships with both existing and new organisations. They added that NiRA would strengthen engagement with relevant government ministries to improve operations and adoption.
They further called on digital media organisations to play an active role in educating the public about Nigeria’s digital identity and to promote .ng-related stories that encourage wider adoption.
