On Thursday Night, South Africa and Czechia battled to a breathless 1-1 draw at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The Mercedes-Benz Theatre in Atlanta was filled with football drama last night. It was a high-stakes fight between the two countries, perhaps because defeat at this point could be very close to elimination. Neither side wanted to be knocked out, they were both determined to make it to the next stage.
The result leaves both clubs at the bottom of group A, with one point each and fighting for survival.

Early Minute Lead
Czechia took an early minute lead through Michal Sadílek, capitalising on a loose midfield pass from South Africa. With three passes, Michal had the ball in his court.
At exactly 5 minutes and 42 seconds, he hit the net in a smooth and slick finish. He didn’t just score the first goal in that match, he created a new record. That was the fastest goal scored in the Tournament so far. Maybe Michal had just wanted to give his team a win, but along with the score, he rewrote history.
Throughout the game, Czechia maintained a strong defence and South Africa controlled the tempo. However, this defence was broken at the 83rd minute by Bafana Bafana’s star, Teboho Mokoena.
South Africa’s Dominance vs Czech’s Defence
After the early lead, South Africa who may have intended to play a patient match were suddenly forced to chase the match. Hugo Broos’s men immediately seized control of the tempo, dominated the ball, and pinned the Czechs deep into their own half.
Bafana Bafana controlled 62% of the ball at Atlanta Stadium. However, despite their almost complete dominance, they found it very difficult to convert that advantage into a goal.
The Czechs, although in a tough spot, wouldn’t let them do that easily. Out of their 16 shots, only 4 met their targets. Czech had a very strong backline.
The Czech goalkeeper, Matěj Kovář delivered a strong performance. He made three crucial saves keeping his team strong even when their defence cracked.
South Africa Equalised
At the 83rd minute, South Africa launched a fiery attack. The Bafana couldn’t just watch their World Cup dream slip out of their hands when the season had barely started. SA fired a tough shot from the penalty box.
Czech midfielder Pavel Šulc had stepped into the line of fire to block the attempt, but the ball struck his hand. Referee Tori Penso did not hesitate, to penalise Pavel for the handball.
With a few minutes left to decide their states, Teboho Mokoena, Bafana midfielder, stepped up. He converted the penalty into a goal past Matěj Kovář. The stadium erupted into celebration.
However, the star player, Mokoena had received another yellow card which means an automatic suspension from South Africa’s final, crucial group-stage game. His suspension poses a huge crisis to Broos as he is one of his most consistent players.
The Bafana Bafana remain in Mokoena yellow card purgatory after his superb effort against Czechia, predicting that his absence on Wednesday is going to be a major headache for Broos.
Again, at the 88th minute, Relebohile Mofokeng unleashed a powerful, full-stretch strike. Kovář’s brilliant save prevented a straight defeat for Czechia.

Response From South Africa Coach
South Africa head coach Hugo Broos reported to BBC Sport:
“I am very proud of my team when you see the reaction after the Mexico game. We play good football. We are aggressive, we had chances, but you need a bit of luck.”
“We made one mistake, everyone knows that [Vladimír Coufal] throws very far. It’s a pity but I’m very proud. The Czech Republic team is very powerful, and very tall. We did very well with the second balls, it was a fantastic performance.”
Fate of Both Teams
According to NBC NEWS, “Both teams still have a chance to advance to the round of 32 from Group A. South Africa will next face South Korea on Wednesday, while the Czech Republic will take on Mexico at the same time.’’
What does this mean for both teams? The 1-1 draw didn’t reduce the pressure on any side. To qualify for round 32, South Africa must beat South Korea on Wednesday, June 24. Also, Czech faces a similar tough battle as they must defeat Mexico. Currently, Mexico is in control of Group A.
