With each passing day, the world witnesses gradual changes. This is in terms of population growth, resources and the dynamics in-between. 

The reality of an era often leads to a peculiar scope of understanding and analysis. More so, perspective is everything. As no two persons have identical physical realities, the theories of population have their notable hypothesis as well as shortcomings. 

Here are a careful breakdown of these theories of population – Malthusian Population Theory and The Demographic Transition Theory. 

Malthusian Population Theory

The Malthusian Population Theory was proposed in 1798 by Thomas Robert Malthus, an English economist and clergyman. He argued that while human population tends to grow rapidly, food production increases slowly. According to him, population grows in a geometric ratio (e.g. 2, 4, 8, 16), whereas food supply grows only in an arithmetic ratio (e.g., 2, 4, 6, 8). Because of this imbalance, Malthus believed that unchecked population growth would outstrip food supply, leading to famine, poverty, disease, and conflict unless controlled by preventive or natural checks.

Features of the Malthusian Population Theory

  • Population grows in geometric progression
  • Malthus stated that population increases very rapidly, following a geometric pattern such as 2, 4, 8,16, 32, etc. This means that if left unchecked, the number of people doubles after regular intervals. He believed that this natural tendency of humans to reproduce quickly would put pressure on available resources.
  • Food supply grows in arithmetic progression
  • Unlike population, food supply grows much more slowly, in an arithmetic pattern such as 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 etc. This means food increases by addition, not multiplication. Farmland can only expand little by little, and crop yields do not double as quickly as population. While the number of people multiplies rapidly, food only increases at a steady, slower rate.
  • Population tends to outgrow food supply
  • Since population grows faster than food production, Malthus argued that a time will come when the number of people will be more than the food available. When this imbalance happens, there will be hunger, competition for scarce resources, poverty, and even social unrest. This mismatch between population and food supply is the core of his theory.
  • Positive checks
  • Malthus believed that if population is not controlled, nature will bring “positive checks” such as famine, wars, epidemics and diseases to reduce the number of people. These checks are often harsh and lead to suffering, but they reduce population growth and restore balance with food supply. In his view, these were unavoidable natural ways of controlling overpopulation.
  • Preventive checks
  • Apart from natural disasters, Malthus suggested that people could voluntarily control population growth through “preventive checks.” These include late marriage, celibacy (remaining unmarried), moral restraint, and family planning. By reducing the number of children born, societies could avoid the severe effects of overpopulation. This was his way of encouraging responsible human behavior in population control.

Criticisms of the Malthusian Population Theory

  • Failure to Recognise Technological Advances
  • Malthus did not foresee the impact of modern technology on food production. He assumed food supply would only grow slowly in arithmetic progression. With the invention of tractors, fertilisers, improved seeds, irrigation and mechanised farming, food production has increased much faster than Malthus predicted. Today, many countries are able to produce surplus food, proving that his prediction of widespread famine was too simplistic.
  • Ignoring the Role of Trade
  • Malthus believed that each country had to depend mainly on its own resources for survival. He did not consider that countries could import food and raw materials from others. Countries with less farmland but wealthy economies (like Japan or Singapore) are still able to feed their people through international trade. This shows that food supply is not strictly limited to what is produced locally, making his argument less valid in a global economy.
  • Overlooking Population Success Stories
  • Malthus argued that rapid population growth would always lead to poverty, famine, and unemployment. History has shown that some highly populated countries, such as China and India, have managed to sustain large populations by improving their agriculture and industry. Even though these countries faced challenges, their ability to feed millions of people contradicts Malthus’s belief that high population automatically leads to disaster.
  • Underestimating Human Adaptation and Innovation
  • Malthus underestimated the ability of humans to adapt to population pressure. As populations grew, people developed new farming methods, scientific discoveries and policies to solve food shortages. Innovations such as the Green Revolution in the 20th century greatly increased crop yields and reduced the risk of famine. This shows that human creativity and innovation can overcome many of the problems Malthus feared.

Support for the Malthusian Population Theory

  • Famine and Food Shortages
  • Malthus’ idea that population grows faster than food supply has been supported in times of famine. In many developing countries, rapid population growth has put pressure on food resources, leading to malnutrition, hunger, and starvation. In parts of Africa and Asia, food production has sometimes failed to keep up with the increasing population, supporting Malthus’ argument that overpopulation can cause food scarcity.
  • Unemployment and Poverty
  • High population growth often leads to a large labour force that exceeds available job opportunities. This creates widespread unemployment and underemployment, which then results in poverty. Countries like Nigeria and India have faced such problems where a fast-growing population makes it difficult for governments to provide jobs and social services. This supports Malthus’ warning that unchecked population growth leads to poverty.
  • Environmental Pressure
  • Malthus’ theory is also supported by the pressure of growing populations on the environment. Overpopulation results in overuse of land, deforestation, soil erosion and depletion of natural resources. In countries with fast-growing populations, farmland becomes overworked and less productive, which directly affects food supply. This aligns with Malthus’ prediction that rising population would stretch resources beyond their limits.
  • Disease and Social Unrest
  • Malthus argued that when population grows too fast, “positive checks” like diseases, wars, and social unrest would naturally reduce it. This can be seen today when crowded and overpopulated areas experience outbreaks of diseases like cholera, malaria and even pandemics. Also, competition for scarce resources sometimes leads to violence and conflicts. These situations give real-life evidence that supports Malthus’ population theory.

Demographic Transition Theory

The Demographic Transition Theory is an economic and demographic model that explains how population growth changes as a country develops over time. It shows the shift from a situation of high birth rates and high death rates in less developed societies to low birth rates and low death rates in more advanced economies. The theory suggests that as improvements occur in health care, food supply, education and living standards, death rates begin to fall, followed later by a decline in birth rates, leading to a stable population. It is often used to study the relationship between economic development and population growth across different countries.

Stages of the Demographic Transition Theory

  • Stage One – Pre-Industrial Stage
  • In this stage, both birth rates and death rates are very high. Families tend to have many children because of the need for farm labour, lack of family planning and high infant mortality. At the same time, poor medical facilities, frequent wars and famines keep death rates high. Population growth is very slow and the total population remains fairly stable. This stage represents societies that are still traditional and largely agricultural.
  • Stage Two – Early Industrial Stage
  • Here, death rates begin to decline due to improvements in food supply, sanitation, and basic health care. Birth rates remain high because cultural practices, lack of education and limited access to contraception still encourage large families. This combination of high birth rates and falling death rates leads to rapid population growth. Many developing countries experience this stage as they begin to modernise.
  • Stage Three – Late Industrial Stage
  • At this stage, birth rates start to fall as people adopt family planning, women become more educated, and urbanisation reduces the need for large families. Death rates also continue to decline, but at a slower pace. With falling birth rates and low death rates, population growth slows down compared to stage two. This stage often reflects countries that are industrialising and expanding access to education and healthcare.
  • Stage Four – Post-Industrial Stage
  • In this stage, both birth rates and death rates are low. Families prefer to have fewer children because of high costs of living, widespread use of contraception, and changing social values. Death rates remain low due to advanced medical systems and better living conditions. Population growth is very small or even stable. Most developed countries, such as those in Western Europe, fall into this stage.

Criticisms of the Demographic Transition Theory

  • Not all countries pass through the stages exactly as described
  • The theory assumes that every country will follow the same path from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. In reality, countries develop differently. Some nations may skip certain stages or remain stuck in one stage for a long time due to economic, political, or cultural reasons. This makes the model too rigid and not universally applicable.
  • Based mainly on the experience of European countries
  • The theory was developed by studying population changes in Europe during and after the Industrial Revolution. It does not fully reflect the population experiences of countries in Africa, Asia, or Latin America, where social, cultural, and economic conditions are quite different. It is Eurocentric and less useful when applied globally.
  • Ignores factors like wars, migration, or government policies
  • The theory assumes that changes in birth and death rates are caused mainly by economic development. Other factors such as wars, diseases, government population policies, and large-scale migration can also affect population growth. Since these external influences are not considered, the theory gives an incomplete explanation of demographic changes.
