Roman Reigns retained the World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins on Sunday, 2 August 2026, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, bringing a 12-year rivalry to its most meaningful conclusion.
Three consecutive spears ended the match. What followed was more significant than any pinfall. Rollins picked up a steel chair and raised it above Reigns, mirroring the moment in 2014 when he betrayed The Shield. He put it down. Reigns grabbed it. He put it down too.
Both men met in the centre of the ring and exchanged the Shield fist bump, signalling that the feud that defined a decade of WWE was finally done. A Shield mask lay on the mat below them.
Night 2 also produced Kevin Owens’ surprise return after 17 months away following a career-threatening neck and spinal cord injury. Chelsea Green won the Interim WWE Women’s Championship in the match’s feel-good moment, Chad Gable got his first singles title in his 13-year WWE career, and a Baron Corbin title win that immediately divided the audience. Six matches. Multiple title changes. One final, deeply earned farewell to The Shield era.
The emotional weight of the weekend landed heaviest in Minneapolis on Sunday. CBS Sports graded the Reigns-Rollins main event A+ and called it “easily the match of the weekend,” noting that both men reminded “even their staunchest critics why WWE trusts them to be in that spot”.
Owens’ return, unannounced until the moment his music played, drew what Bleacher Report described as a crowd reaction that “met the moment” after 17 months of uncertainty over whether he would ever compete again.

Kevin Owens Steals the Opening
SmackDown GM Nick Aldis opened Night 2 by upgrading the originally announced Balor vs Zayn contender’s match, first adding Gunther, fresh off his Night 1 win over Aldis himself, and then bringing out Owens. The reaction when his music played was immediate and overwhelming. Owens sprinted to the ring and attacked from all angles, delivering cannonballs to Balor and Gunther before stopping to hug his best friend Zayn. The two embraced with genuine emotion before trading punches in the way only they can. Owens worked his real-life injury into the psychology of the match, grabbing his neck after every hard bump, per CBS Sports reporting.
After a sequence of Stunners, Owens pinned Zayn to earn his shot at CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship. A Punk vs Owens rivalry has never materialised at the highest level in WWE, despite their years of history. CBS Sports noted it is “the freshest and most interesting option” for Punk heading into the autumn.
Chad Gable Finally Gets His Moment
Chad Gable, 40 years old, born and raised in Minneapolis, won the Intercontinental Championship in his home town in front of his family. His journey to this point included stints as Shorty G, team player, comedy character El Grande Americano, and underdog babyface. He tapped out Penta with his ankle lock after absorbing significant punishment, including a Mexican Destroyer on the apron and sustained targeting of his left shoulder. After the bell, Penta raised Gable’s arm in respect. Gable’s family joined him in the ring.
In a tearful in-ring speech broadcast by CBS Sports and USA TODAY, Gable said: “My name is Chad Gable. And I was born, raised, and I lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This is my family who stood by me through the highs and lows, all the way to this moment where I can finally say that I’m the Intercontinental champion.”
Reigns and Rollins Find Closure After 12 Years
Twelve years after Seth Rollins shattered The Shield by driving a steel chair into Roman Reigns’ back, both men finally found a way to let it go in Minneapolis. The match itself was built on equal parts ego and emotion, with both men repeatedly referencing the past through callbacks to their former stablemate Dean Ambrose, including Reigns delivering Dirty Deeds and Rollins paying tribute with a clothesline in Ambrose’s style.
Both men talked too much and paid for it repeatedly. Rollins spent time taunting rather than finishing, allowing Reigns recovery windows he should never have been given. Reigns did the same, trash-talking Rollins at moments when a spear would have ended it. The pendulum swung constantly. A Pedigree from Rollins, a Stomp that Reigns avoided, a guillotine choke, a buckle bomb, and a series of spears all produced near-falls that had the Minneapolis crowd on its feet.
The defining sequence came when the referee went down and Rollins retrieved a chair. He raised it above Reigns, recreating 2014 exactly. Then he stopped. Reigns took the chair. He stopped too. Both men chose to settle it inside the ropes. Three consecutive spears from Reigns finished the match cleanly, without Bloodline interference of any kind.
Afterwards, Reigns extended his fist. Rollins hesitated, placed a Shield mask on the mat, and then joined him. CBS Sports described it as “a masterclass in professional wrestling storytelling” and graded it A+. Bleacher Report called it “one of the best matches of the year”.
The Rest of Night 2
Chelsea Green retrieved the Interim WWE Women’s Championship by outlasting Flair, Cargill, Stratton, and Legend in a ladder match. Michin and B-Fab interfered on Cargill’s behalf, leaving Green momentarily hung in the ladder before everyone else wiped each other out. Her eventual climb produced what Bleacher Report called “one of the loudest pops for a result in recent memory”.
Baron Corbin beat Trick Williams for the United States Championship after Lil Yachty accidentally went through a table, a distraction that allowed Corbin to land a championship belt shot and End of Days. The finish was intentionally tainted, setting up a rematch. Danhausen defeated Dominik Mysterio in the Human Monies on a Pole match with Joe Hendry and the Minihausens involved throughout. Charlotte Flair’s entrance gear honoured Scarlett Guillen, an 8-year-old fan who died in July after a battle with cancer.

Survivor Series Season Begins
Reigns heads into autumn as World Heavyweight Champion, with LA Knight and Solo Sikoa identified by CBS Sports as likely next challengers. Owens vs Punk takes shape as the marquee Undisputed title feud. Gable begins his Intercontinental Championship reign in Minneapolis and carries it forward on Raw. Green’s interim title will resolve once the original title picture clears.
SummerSlam 2026 is over. Minnesota delivered everything it was asked to.
