Sami Zayn Dethrones CM Punk On WWE SmackDown 11/09 In Mexico

Sami Zayn is the new Undisputed WWE Champion after a chaotic main event capped off "Championship Friday" in Mexico City.

Zayn defeated CM Punk at Arena CDMX on September 11, 2026, reclaiming the title he lost to Punk a few months earlier in a match that spiralled into complete pandemonium once Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae and Kevin Owens all got involved. Nigerian WWE fans staying up for the show witnessed one of the wildest finishes of the year.

Punk had promised backstage that bad behaviour needed consequences, and he spent the opening stretch targeting Zayn's recently healed wrist.

However, an early knee injury slowly turned the tide against him, and the closing minutes descended into interference from every direction. By the time the dust settled, Zayn stood over a fallen champion with his hand raised for a second time in his career.

Elsewhere on a stacked card, Chelsea Green survived a brutal Women's Title defence, Rey Fenix celebrated in front of his home fans, and Damian Priest shocked everyone with a vicious betrayal.

Randy Orton also opened the show by placing himself firmly in the title picture, meaning SmackDown's main event scene now looks more crowded than ever heading toward Money in the Bank.

 

Zayn Overcomes Interference To Reclaim The Title

Punk seemingly hurt his knee early in the contest, yet he still found the composure to attack Zayn's surgically repaired wrist at every opportunity. Zayn answered by locking in a Figure-four leglock when Punk went for Go to Sleep, and the match swung back and forth from there with neither man willing to give an inch.

The finish arrived only after total chaos engulfed ringside. Gargano and LeRae rushed down hoping to help Zayn, and Punk actually forced a tap-out with the Anaconda Vise, though the referee missed it entirely while distracted. Owens then grabbed the title belt, intending to strike Zayn, only to accidentally clock Punk instead when Zayn ducked out of the way. That opening proved fatal, as Zayn connected with the Helluva Kick moments later to secure the pinfall.

Before the bout, Zayn told Cathy Kelley backstage that his pursuit of the title was never really personal ambition but rather a matter of justice. He explained that he would have gladly stepped aside for Owens, Gargano, or several other stars, insisting it simply "has to be him". That mindset explains why so many allies felt compelled to get physically involved once the bell rang.

 

The Rest Of The Card Delivered Plenty Of Drama

Championship Friday lived up to its billing across the rest of the show too. Rey Fenix retained his AAA Cruiserweight Championship against Ricky Saints in an acrobatic homecoming performance, only for Saints to attack him from behind afterwards rather than accept defeat gracefully. Chelsea Green also survived a mask-ripping battle with Nia Jax to retain her Women's Championship within the mandated 30-day window, with Tiffany Stratton absorbing a big shot meant for Green along the way.

Damian Priest delivered the night's biggest shock away from the title picture, turning on long-time ally R-Truth immediately after their tag team loss. Backstage, Finn Balor and Gunther also traded verbal and physical shots over a future Money in the Bank opportunity, adding yet another simmering rivalry to SmackDown's crowded landscape.

 

SmackDown's Main Event Picture Just Got Even Busier

Randy Orton opened the broadcast by declaring war on Cody Rhodes and vowing to challenge for the title regardless of who left Mexico City as champion. With Rhodes set to appear for a sit-down interview soon, WWE now has Zayn, Punk, Owens, Gargano, Orton and Rhodes all realistically tied to the same storyline, alongside Balor and Gunther building their own separate feud.

That level of depth should make SmackDown appointment viewing over the coming weeks. Zayn's redemption story has clearly not finished writing itself, and with so many hungry challengers circling, his second reign as champion may prove considerably shorter on peace and quiet than his first.
