Nowadays, it is usual to find people complaining that their electric prepaid meter is rejecting tokens. This is evidenced by the number of emails that reach our inbox occasionally.

Typical issues facing prepaid meter customers, from their emails, include: the inability to recharge meter, error code being prompted upon loading, and meter displaying failed after entering token, among others.

This article is specially for those who are having issues loading their prepaid meter token. For the sake of clarity, I will address in the simplest terms so as to accommodate both professionals and users.

Reasons Why Prepaid Meter Is Rejecting Tokens

Wrong Meter Number

When your meter number is wrong, it becomes impossible to load tokens on the meter. According to Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), the inability of a meter to accept tokens may be due to wrong meter number when vending. To solve this issue, the customer is expected to contact the electricity distribution company.

Improper Connection

Even If there is power supply to the meter, and the meter is powered, the connection might still not have been placed properly. If that is the case, take note of your meter number and other necessary details, then contact your electricity distribution company.

Wrong Token

If you are unsure whether this might be the reason, you can try to purchase another token to confirm if it works or not. If the new token works, file a complaint with the electricity distribution company on the grounds of an invalid token purchased, They might issue a refund or rectify the token.

Smart Card

The smart card may need to be wiped gently with a clean dry cloth so that obstacles preventing it from connecting could be removed. After carefully cleaning the smart card (Avoid damaging it), Insert it again. If it works, next time try to keep the card in a clean obstacle-free environment to prevent similar issues.

Inactivated Meter

If your prepaid meter is new, you need to activate it before loading tokens. For Conlog meters, the activation token is used to activate the meter. To get an activation token, visit the electricity distribution company and request for it. It will be sent to you by SMS, within 48 hours.
