Coronavirus cases worldwide have reached 2 million.
Since its outbreak in December 2019, several cases have been recorded globally. The deadly virus, labelled a pandemic by WHO, which has been spreading fast from its epicenter, Wuhan is particularly taking a toll on U.S grounds.
Recall that on April 2, Geeky Nigeria reported that the world cases of Coronavirus was 1 million. The months leading to that moment, January and February were slow for the spread for the spread of COVID – 19.
But then, ever since the world cases of the outbreak got to 1 million, cases started to pop up dramatically. USA , which has been the hub of COVID – 19, particular got the most hit in 13 days.
On April 2, USA had over 240,000 cases of the virus and over 6,000 deaths. Now, it has over 600,000 cases and over 26,000 deaths, an approximate increase of 360,000 cases and 20,000 deaths.
Nigeria, as at that time, had 184 cases and 2 deaths, which is now, as at the time of reporting, 373 cases and 11 deaths.
The U.S government, in response to the alarming spread of coronavirus, has been enforcing several measures pertaining to Health and Safety, Money and Taxes, Education, Scam and Fraud, and so on…
Irrespective, the figures continue to add up for U.S, so much that it would seem as if they are doing nothing to combat the spread of the deadly virus.
Here in Nigeria, three cities are significantly affected by COVID – 19 – Lagos, Ogun, FCT.
Lagos, being the epicentre, started with shutting down schools, banning public gatherings of more than 50 people, which the government later reduced to 20.
Markets not related to food, were ordered to close. Then there was an alleged dusk to dawn curfew, which was nullified by the intervention of Federal Government to place the state under 14 days lockdown.
So, we begin to hear such news of security agencies clamping down defaulters. It doesn’t get any better, as the federal government opens food markets four hours daily, 10am – 2pm in the three states affected.
Towards the end of the 14 days lockdown, Lagos was hit by a major unrest. Hoodlums began to rampage in Alimosho and Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government areas of Lagos. They looted shops, and robbed houses even in daytime.
These hoodlums have been reported to attack in Lagos – Agege, Abule Egba, Alagbado, Egbeda, Ejigbo, Ijaiye, Ikotun, Ogba, and Ogun – Agbado, Akute, Sango,
At the evening of the lockdown due date, Monday. President buhari announced a 14 days extension. This was after he said “Lockdown will last as long as necessary”
More attention needs to be placed on security and welfare, even as Nigeria braces for a looming recession.
