The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna Sector Command, would deploy Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), commonly known as drones, for checking and maintaining traffic during the Eid-El-Kabir festive period.
The Kaduna FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Muhammad Hafiz, said that it is to further ensure sanity on Kaduna High ways especially during this years’ Eid-El-Kabir celebration.
The command would also deploy Special Marshals and 28 patrol vehicles.
Hafiz included that the drones to be deployed for aerial surveillance was in collaboration with Kaduna State Drone Centre to monitor major corridors of Kaduna highways to identify traffic-related challenges.
He noted that the exercise was pursuant to the Corps’ 2020 strategic goals of reducing road crashes by 15% and fatalities by 20% at the end of the year.
“This plan is designed to address the perennial rise in the violation of traffic rules and regulations especially during festive season”.
“The intensive special patrol is aimed at addressing the spate of avoidable road crashes usually associated with the surge of human and vehicular traffic across the country, it is an all inclusive exercise which will witness high visibility and intensive patrols.
“The special patrol would also be a prompt rescue service, strict enforcement of traffic rules and robust public enlightenment campaigns in Kaduna State”, he said.
Hafiz also stated that removal of obstructions from the highways, traffic control, decongestion, public enlightenment campaigns through the distribution of safety handbills and other forms of awareness campaign would be effective.
“The command would also take in addition to strict enforcement of road traffic regulation infractions such as overloading and other life-threatening traffic offences in addition to compliance with Covid-19 protocol.
“Adherence to social distancing at transport terminals and in-travels would be enforced to curtail the spread of Covid19, he said.
According to Hafiz, the exercise forms part of the Corps’ sustained efforts to build a consistent tradition of enforcing traffic rules and regulations throughout the year to avoid a one-off approach to road safety management in Nigeria.
“The 2020 Eid-El-Kabir Sallah patrol signifies the corps intention within its powers to ensure zero road crash, injury and death in addition to reduction of possible spread of Covid-19 Pandemic throughout the period of the Sallah celebration.
“Road traffic crashes are avoidable and only compliance with best practices of road use will guaranty the safety of all road users”, Hafiz said.
