The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has issued a fresh 14-day ultimatum for the Federal Government to address its demands or face the consequences.
The ultimatum issued on Wednesday in Abuja is coming on the heels of an earlier one issued via a memo reference no. COEASU/NS/01/19, and dated 13th July 2020.
Mr Taiwo Olayanju, COEASU, General Secretary said this in a letter addressed to the Minister of Labour and Employment on Wednesday in Abuja.
In the letter, the union demanded the Federal Government to address lingering and emerging industrial issues of concern, but which were yet to be addressed, prompting its latest action.
Olayanju said that the union took the decision following her Expanded National Executive Council (ENEC) meeting, noting that the union was irked by the fact that the ministry had not deemed it necessary, or found time in any way or paid attention the union’s demands and ultimatum.
“This further qualifies government’s insensitivity to issues bordering on the advancement of the nation’s teacher education industry.
“Having considered the implication of the insensitivity of the government to all the issues of industrial concern, as they affect our members specifically, and the Colleges of Education in general.
“The union may have no cause to wait any longer after fourteen (14) days, should government’s posture to our plight remain the same,but call on its members to commence a nation-wide strike action,”he said.
He therefore said that the planned strike would affect every form of service being currently rendered by the institutions.
He further added that the union expects government’s positive response to the extension of ultimatum so as to forestall a possible industrial action.
