Ookla is a tech company that focuses on fixed broadband and mobile network testing applications, data and analysis. It owns speedtest.net, which provides free analysis of Internet access performance metrics, such as connection data rate and latency.
In their recent second quarter release, Ookla initiated a test on Nigeria’s Mobile and Fixed Broadband Internet Speeds. The results, which were based on data collected from speedtest.net saw mobile provider Airtel Nigeria as having the fastest Speed Score, and Fixed broadband provider ipNX having the best Speed Score (19.25) and Consistency Score (39.6%) during Q2 2021.
Mobile Networks
According to Speedtest, Airtel was the fastest mobile operator in Nigeria in Q2 2021 with a Speed Score of 28.82 on modern chipsets. to MTN’s 25.78. Other networks such as Glo and 9mobile were far behind with 10.35 and 9.49 respectively.
MTN edged out Airtel for best Consistency Score on mobile during Q2 2021, 83.4% to Airtel’s 82.5%
In the latency section, 9mobile had the lowest latency at 44 ms, closely followed by Glo at 46ms. MTN and Airtel tied at 48ms.
An analysis of performance on some of the fastest phones in Nigeria demonstrated the iPhone 12 Pro 5G with the fastest mean download speed during Q2 2021 with 40.17 Mbps, and mean upload speed of 12.64 Mbps.
Other devices are iPhone 12 Pro Max 5G, download speed – 38.63 Mbps, and upload speed – 12.64 Mbps, iPhone 11 Pro Max, download speed – 34.57 Mbps, and upload speed – 11.46 Mbps, iPhone 11 Pro, download speed – 34.20 Mbps, and upload speed – 10.24 Mbps, iPhone Xs Max, download speed – 29.27 Mbps, and upload speed – 9.28 Mbps.
As for City Speeds, Port Harcourt continued to have the best mobile mean download speeds of any Nigerian city at 26.34 Mbps, and 10.79 Mbps upload speed. Lagos showed a mean download of 24.15 Mbps, and upload speed of 9.77 Mbps.
Fixed Networks
Speedtest Intelligence reveals ipNX was the fastest fixed broadband provider among top providers in Nigeria in Q2 2021 with a Speed Score of 19.25.
Others that closely followed were Glo, 13.40; KKONTech, 11.72; Spectranet, 10.59; Airtel, 10.13 ; and SWIFT Networks, 7.96.
In mean latency, KKONTech had the lowest latency at 16 ms, followed by ipNX, 17ms; Glo, 32ms; Cobranet, 33ms; and SWIFT Networks 42ms.
For consistency, ipNX had the highest Score in Nigeria during Q2 2021, with 39.6% of results showing at least a 25 Mbps minimum download speed and 3 Mbps minimum upload speed. Others were Glo, 25.0%; KKONTech, 17.7%; Airtel, 16.6%; and MTN, 11.4%
For the Fast Cities, Ibadan showed the fastest mean download speed over fixed broadband among Nigeria’s most populous cities during Q2 2021 at 22.77 Mbps, followed by Benin City and Lagos with download speeds of 18.46 Mbps and 15.59 Mbps respectively.
