NG@62: 62 Nigerian Women That Set The Pace In Their Industry

The significant role of the female gender in society cannot be over-emphasized. Many Nigerian women are at the forefront in their industries blazing the trail. History has also shown that women destined for greatness cannot be stopped; no matter the blows they are dealt.

With many resistive factors and barriers limiting women today, some Nigerian women have defied the odds by proving that any dream is achievable.

These women have carved a niche for themselves in male-dominated sectors to become pioneers of thriving businesses and top leads in their areas of expertise. There is simply no stopping the Nigerian woman, especially when her heart is set on her goals.

Here are 62 women (in no particular order) we consider achievers and trailblazers in their enterprises. We are also using the opportunity of the 62^nd Independence Anniversary of Nigeria to celebrate them as our heroines.

1. Folorunso Alakija. She is a philanthropist and business tycoon in the oil, fashion, print, and real estate sectors. She actively directs the Rose of Sharon Group and is vice chairman of Famfa oil. She earned the 96th Most Powerful Woman in the world in 2014 and was ranked in the richest league of businesswomen according to Forbes with a massive net worth of $1 billion as of 2020.
2. Tara Fela-Durotoye. She is the founder of House of Tara International. She is currently leading in the beauty sector with cutting-edge ideas, having also established a makeup school in Nigeria in 1999. In 2013, she appeared on the Forbes list as one of the Most powerful women entrepreneurs.
3.  Uchenna Pedro, founder, and CEO of Bella Naija. She is actively setting the pace in the fashion media industry by helping people’s fashion sense. She glamorized the Nigerian social culture and tradition. She was recognized as the British Council International Young Media Entrepreneur of the year in 2013.
4. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the first woman, the first African to lead the organization. Forbes recognized her as one of Africa’s 50 Most Powerful Women in 2020.
5. Olufunmilayo Ransome, founder of the Nigeria Women Union. History has it that Olufunmilayo was a no-nonsense woman. She was a women’s rights activist and founder of the Nigerian Women Union. She was undoubtedly the first woman to drive a car in Nigeria.
6. Elizabeth Abimbola Awoliyi, the first female Physician in Nigeria. She was a trailblazer in medicine.  She made the practice of medicine a norm for women in Nigeria. She is also the first West African Woman to earn a License of Royal Surgeon in Dublin.
7. Aderonke Kale, she is the first female Army-Major General in Nigeria.  In the era of military rule, Aderonke Kale had a say despite the discrimination against female military officers. She was born in 1959. She is the first female army major general in Nigeria.
8. Prof. Dora Akinyulii. She was the Director General of NAFDAC from 2001 to 2008 when she came into the limelight.We can’t discuss the history of leading and impactful women in Nigeria without mentioning the great Dora Akinyulii. She was a force that was unbeatable until she was cruelly snatched by the cold hands of death. I knew nothing about NAFDAC until she became the DG. The standard of food and drugs in Nigeria improved because of one uncompromising woman
9. Ibukun Awosika. She is the former Chairman of First Bank Nigeria. The sterling history of First Bank Nigeria cannot be told without the mention of Ibukun Awosika. She is currently a member of the Binance Global Advisory Board. She is a motivational speaker, and rightly so, given that her life and career have inspired many young women in Nigeria to be the best in their chosen fields.
10. Oby Ekwesili. She was once the Minister of Education and Vice President of the World Bank. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors for Women Political Leaders. Also, a member of the Board of trustees of Fundacao Dom Cabral and chairperson of the Board of Ehizua Hub. She is a chartered accountant, a senior economic advisor, and a public analyst.
11. Linda Ikeji. She is a leading Blogger in Nigeria and the founder of Linda Ikeji Television. She is popularly known as the blog queen. She started blogging when blogging was not popular. She is also a writer. Today, she is a force to be reckoned with in the media world.
12. Mosunmola Abdul. She is the founder of Ebony Life TV. She is popularly referred to as Mo Abudu or Aunty Mo. She is a media Mogul. She established ELT in 2006, airing in more than 49 countries in Africa and in the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean. She established Ebony Life Films in 2014. She debuted as an executive producer with the film Fifty and has since produced many more. She earned a spot and was recognized by a Hollywood reporter as one of the 25 most Powerful Women in Global television.
13. Tobi Amusan. She is an athlete and the 100m Hurdles’ current World record holder in the women’s category. She is our most recent addition to the list of women setting records in their fields. She became a global sensation after smashing the World record, the Games record, and the African Championship record in the 100m hurdles. The Federal Government recently conferred her with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). She is an inspiration to many girls and youth at large.
14. Stella Okoli. She is the founder and CEO of Emzor Pharmaceutical. She is a septuagenarian with juvenile energy. She started Emzor Chemist in 1977 and it metamorphosed into Emzor Pharmaceutical in 1984. Since then the brand has been setting the pace in the pharmaceutical space in Nigeria and beyond. She is a philanthropist and runs a foundation in memory of her late son.
15. Onyeka Onwenu, a Singer/Songwriter and artist. Onyeka has a robust career in broadcasting with NTA, music, acting, politics, and activism. She wrote and presented the internationally acclaimed BBC/NTA documentary, Nigeria, A Squandering of Riches. She took major acting roles in movies like Nightmare, Half of a Yellow Sun, Lion Heart, and Widow’s cot. In 2006, she won the African Academy Movie Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Widow’s Cot.  In 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed her the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development. As a veteran singer, she set the pace for many of Nigeria’s female artists. Most of her songs were top of the charts and they remain timeless.
16. Grace Alele Williams, a Professor of Mathematics. She is the first Nigerian female to bag a doctorate. She is also the first Nigerian Vice-Chancellor at the University of Benin. After her term at the University of Benin, she joined the board of Chevron-Texaco Nigeria. She is a beacon in the education space for both men and women. The nonagenarian is the recipient of several awards including the Order of the Niger in 1987. She is a Fellow of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Academy of Education. Also in her bag is the Centenary Award in 2014. She is one of 100 people to receive it. The award recognizes her unique contributions to the socio-cultural, economic, and political development of Nigeria in the last 100 years.
17. TyBello. She is a Singer/Songwriter and Photographer. Toyin Sokefun-Bello popularly called TY Bello is an award-winning singer and photographer. She came to the limelight as a member of the defunct music group, Kinetically Ushering Salvation into Hearts and Homes (KUSH). After the group was dissolved, she went solo and released chart-topping singles such as Greenland, Ekundayo, Funmise, and so on. TY has also made her mark in photography as a renowned photographer. She has photographed three sitting presidents including President Goodluck Jonathan and top business moguls and celebrities. TY’s songs and photography have earned her awards in Nigeria and abroad. Through her art, she has helped in creating an enabling platform for upcoming photographers.
18. Chioma Ajunwa. She is an Athlete, Footballer, and Policewoman. She is the first Nigerian to win an Olympic Gold medal and the first African to win gold at the Olympics in a field event. This feat she accomplished at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Chioma is also the only Nigerian that has featured Nigeria at the highest level of sports participation globally. As a member of the super falcons, she represented Nigeria at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, China 1991.  In 2017, she launched her Foundation. Last year, she also launched a sports facility Centre to commemorate 25 years of her Atlanta Olympics feat. This also forms part of her giveback initiative to Nigeria. She is also a member of the Nigerian Police Force. She remains a role model to many Nigerian youths and athletes.
19. Tiwa Savage. She is a Music Artist. Tiwa is a graduate of Business Administration from Kent College. She also studied music at Berklee College and graduated with a degree in professional music. While at Berklee, she was one of the 24 finalists of the UK Edition of X-Factor. She has contributed to the songs of many international brands such as Akon, Snoop Dog, Whitney Houston, Babyface, and so on. She has several endorsements one of which is Pepsi, which is major as this puts her in the same bucket with other Pepsi Ambassadors like Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Micki Minaj, Mariah Carey, etc.  She has earned Grammy nominations in recent times and is also a recipient of many other awards. She is a philanthropist and currently the richest Nigerian female musician.
20. Agbani Darego, Miss World in 2001. Chief Ibiagbanidokibubo Asenite Darego is a model and beauty queen. She was crowned Miss World in 2001 and is the first black African to win it and the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria before her global feat. The Nigerian government conferred on her the title of the Member of the Federal Republihonors of Nigeria, one of the highest honors in the country. As a model, she also has set the pace for many Nigerians and black Africans. She is the second black model to land a three-year contract with L’Oréal, a French personal care company, and was photographed by Vogue’s Annie Leibovitz, a portrait photographer. Agbani has appeared in many magazines including, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Essence. She has also modeled for Christian Dior, Avon, and Macy to mention a few. She has also worked with ace designers such as Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Oscar de la Renta, Gianfranco Ferre, and Marc Bouwer. In 2013, she launched her denim range, AD by Agbani Darego.
21. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.  She is currently a politician. Hon. Abike was a TV presenter and broadcaster per excellence in her early days before she ventured into politics. She was one of the beautiful faces on NTA’s Program, Newsline in the 80s and 90s. She is a former member of the Nigerian House of representatives with first-rate achievements. She championed and sponsored many bills as a three-time House of Representatives member chiefly the Freedom of Information Bill (FOI bill), and the Violence Against Persons Bill which have been signed into law. She also sponsored the Nigerian Diaspora Commission Bill amongst others as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Diaspora matters. She is currently the incumbent Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian in Diaspora Commission. Abike is well known for her proactivity in engaging Nigerians in the diaspora and helping to address knotty diaspora issues.
22. Osinachi Egbu aka Sinach.  She is a Gospel Artist. Sinach is an award-winning gospel artist. Her song Waymaker which she released in 2015 became a global anthem in 2020 as a song of hope and healing for the nations of the world during the heat of the Covid pandemic. It was on the Christian Copyright Licensing International top 100 chart for several months and claimed the No. 1 position from June until December 2020, making it the most played song in Churches across the United States in 2020. This song later won the Dove awards, Song of the Year, 2020. This is the first for any Nigerian and African. She is also the third Nigerian music artist and the first gospel artist whose music video hit 100 million viewers on Youtube. In 2017, she was named among the 100 most influential Christians in Nigeria alongside the likes of Enoch Adeboye and Chris Oyakhilome.  In 2020, she was named among Africa’s Most Influential Women.
23. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She is a Nigerian author whose work drew extensively on the Biafran war in Nigeria during the late 1960s. Her works include novels like; Purple Hibiscus (2003) which garnered the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 2005 for Best First Book in Africa, and that year’s Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for overall Best First Book. Her book was also short-listed in 2004 for the Orange Prize (later called the Orange Broadband Prize and now the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction). Chimamanda is a popular feminist and has been an inspiration to thousands of women around the world who are the constant victims of the hegemonic masculinity that is embedded in the patriarchal society of today.
24. Dr. Becky Olubukola-Oke Ph.D.  She is a Nigerian Businesswoman and philanthropist. She is involved in the real estate, agro-allied, and entertainment industries. She is the General Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BSTAN Group. Dr. Olubukola is also the Erelu Atunluse of Erinmoland in Osun State. She has also spread her tentacles to Lagos where she is equally currently making her impact felt. She has a private charitable foundation called, Pricaso Care Foundation (PCF). The foundation is dedicated to adding value to people’s lives across Africa by supporting health, education, and economic empowerment initiatives for Youths, Women, children, orphans, widows, and boy/girl children to facilitate a sustainable community and national development. The foundation is currently one of the fastest-growing private foundations in sub-Saharan Africa.
25. Nancy Isime.  She is a media personality. Although filled with lots of choices to pick from the start of her many career options, she eventually went with the idea of being a TV presenter and Actress. She launched her “Nancy Isime show” in 2019 and became the Voice Nigeria presenter in 2021. She made a mark as one of the main casts of Blood Sisters, a crime thriller, that premiered in 2022.
26. Fara Ashiru Jituboh the CEO of Okra, a Fintech startup company established in 2020. As an entrepreneur and a software engineer, she dived into the Fintech industry to facilitate the use of applications to manage businesses. This desire was influenced by the difficulty she once faced while trying to use one. She is recreating the picture of Fintech and making easier, access to real-time financial information sourcing between customers, applications, and financial institutions.
27. Catherine Uju Ifejika, a Nigerian independent executive and a lawyer. She is the chairperson and CEO of Brittania-U Nigeria Limited, an integrating oil and gas company incorporated in 1995 and became operational in 2003. Catherine led several leadership positions in time past for companies such as Chevron and attested to forming six companies in seven years. In 2010, she formed Brittania-U Ghana.
28. Funmi Badejo. She is a Special Assistant to the US President, Joe Biden. She is also the associate counsel in the White House Counsel’s office. She is from Kogi State.
29. Enoh Obong, She is the Director of the United States Trade and Development Agency. She earlier served as the Permanent Secretary of the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Economic Development and Reconstruction.
30. Genevieve Nnaji. She is a prolific actor, producer, and director. She got into the movie industry in the year 1998. She is a perfect definition of the word unstoppable. She won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2005, making her the first actor to win the award. She went from being a mere pretty-faced actor to directing, producing, and screenwriting her works. Her directional debut movie, Lionheart, put Nigeria on the global map after it was purchased by the largest online movie streaming service, Netflix.
31. Wendy Okolo. She is a Nigerian-American aerospace research engineer in the Intelligent Systems Division at NASA Ames Research Center. She is the first Black woman to obtain a Ph.D. degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. She is also the Special Emphasis Programs Manager for Women at Ames. The 30-year-old who was born to a family of six has taken off her career at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a United States agency responsible for the civilian space program as well as aeronautics and aerospace research.
32. Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo. Although not yet a household name, Adeola has certainly made many Nigerian women proud. Not only has she successfully made a name for herself in what is considered a male-dominated industry especially in Nigeria, She started her aviation career at the US-based Sunrise Aviation Academy where she graduated in 2011. In 2019, she became the first Nigerian female pilot to work for Qatar Airways in the Middle East, a region that is challenging for women hoping to become pilots. She is the first Nigerian female pilot to fly the Boeing 767 Aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean, being in the same league as Kenya’s Captain Irene Koki, and Ethiopia’s Captain Amsale Gulau.
33. Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett. She is a renowned actor, journalist, and TV presenter. Her acting debut was in Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel in 1966. She plied her acting trade in London for a long while before returning to Nigeria in 1971. Taiwo has featured in many top-notch international and local movies and shows including, the legendary, Some Mothers Do Have Them, Tinsel, Oloibiri, and so on. In 2008, she was honored as a leader of British-African theatre. In 2006, she was conferred with the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger, and in 2022, at the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA), she was honored with The Industry Merit Award. She is a Fellow of the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists (SONTA).
34. Olukemi Badenoch. She is the minister of State for Leveling Up Communities and Minister of State for Equalities. She is another Nigerian woman currently breaking ground on the international front. It is satisfying to know that Olukemi was the only woman of color in Boris Johnson’s administration. She was born in Wimbledon and did her high school in Lagos, Nigeria. She returned to the United Kingdom at sixteen and later studied Computer System Engineering. Her career took off at Logica, and the world became her oyster since then.
35. Aminat Mohammed, Deputy Secretary General of United Nations. She was the Nigeria Minister for Environment and later became the Deputy General of the United Nations, appointed by Antonio Guterres. She is also a member of the UN Interagency Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance.
36. Olaitan Martins. She is the Group Executive, Transaction Banking of FBN. Olaitan became the Group Executive Transaction Banking in 2021. She was formerly the Group Head of the Manufacturing Sector Corporate Banking Group before assuming her current position. Olaitan is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Manchester Business School, United Kingdom.
37. Dorathy Jeff-Nnamani. She is the MD/CEO of Novo Health Africa Limited. Novo Health is an organization committed to providing excellent health care services. She was formerly the MD/CEO of PHB Healthcare Limited, an arm of Bank PHB HMO.
38. Queen Amina of Zaria. She was the first woman to rule in the Zaazu Kingdom of Zaria. She was a brave and selfless warrior. She was born in 1553. She ruled the Zaazu kingdom for thirty-four years in the 16th century. A few months into her rule as queen, she embarked on her first military project, advocating military campaigns to broaden her kingdom and to allow the easy and safe passage of Hausa traders through the Sahara region.
39. Margaret Ekpo. She is a Human Rights Activist and the founder, Aba Township Women Association. Margret Ekpo was a force of reckoning in those days. She was a renowned activist who teamed up with her colleague Olufunmilayo Ransome Kuti to protest against the killings at Enugu Coal Mine. She also fought for the rights of women against subjugation. She established the Aba Township Women Association, which later became a political pressure group. The Calabar Airport presently bears her name in honor of her influence on the growth of eastern Nigeria.
40. Gambo Sawaba. She is a Politician, Philanthropist, and Human Rights Activist. She started her journey as a politician at the young age of 17 and became the Deputy Chairperson of the Great Nigeria People’s Party. She was elected the leader of the national women’s wing of the Northern Element Progressive Union-(NEPU), a party known to support women’s education. She was a campaigner against child marriage in Nigeria and advocated for jobs to be provided for women and education for the girl child. She was famous for being the most jailed woman in Nigeria.
41. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh. She was the physician responsible for curbing Ebola Virus in Nigeria after preventing the first case patient from exiting the hospital after diagnosis. She alerted the Ministry of health in time to be able to manage the spread and outbreak of the deadly virus. She died a warrior who selflessly bore her life to save many from contracting the Ebola virus. The nation appreciated her role and named an Abuja road after her in loving memory of her service to the nation.
42. Sarah Nndazwa Jibril. She is a Politician, Psychologist, and Philanthropist. She is Nigeria’s first female presidential candidate. She contested under the Social Democratic Party. She was also the special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan for Ethics and Moral Values.
43. Lois Auta. She is the first ‘disabled’ Legislative Candidate and the founder of Cedar Seed Foundation. Lois Auta is one woman challenging the status quo. She suffered from polio since age two, which made her permanently restricted to a wheelchair but she didn’t allow her situation to stop her. She founded Cedar seed, a non-profit Organization advocating the rights of people with disabilities.
44. Sandra Agurebor is the forty-fourth person on our list. She is Nigeria’s first female auto mechanic. Sandra has made her mark by establishing a foundation that supports women called the “Lady Mechanic Initiative,” which trains sexually abused and underprivileged women to become mechanics to be able to earn a living and fend for themselves.
45. Adenike Oyetunde. She is the Senior Special Assistant to Lagos State Governor on People Living with Disabilities. Adebike suffered bone marrow cancer at the age of twenty, consequently losing her right leg. She didn’t allow her disabilities to stop her as she studied hard to become a lawyer and grew a successful radio career. She also started the Amputee United Initiative and worked with the “Irede” foundation – a foundation focusing on children with amputations and providing them with prosthetic limbs.
46. Kafayat Sanni. She is a Flight Lieutenant. She became a pilot at just 22 in 2019, trained in the US, and was named the overall best pilot at the NAF 401 Flying Training School. She is undoubtedly doing her beloved nation.
47. Tolulope Arotile on our list. She is the first female helicopter pilot. She attended the Nigerian Airforce Primary School, Kaduna. She proceeded to Secondary where she joined the cadet. There, she actively pursued her education and ambition. She gained admission into the Nigerian Defense Academy in September 2012. Unfortunately, her life was terminated when the nation lost her to the cold hands of death in 2020.
48. Maryam Apaokagi. Maryam is popularly known as Taaooma. She is also a content creator, cinematographer, and social media influencer and is well known for her hilarious skits. She currently serves as the CEO and founder of Chop Tao, a food company. Maryam also directs for The Greenade Company, a cinematography firm.
49. Arit Okpo, a Nigerian journalist and television host. She is the host of CNN International’s African Voices Changemakers and a former presenter/producer at EbonyLife TV. Arit is a professional media specialist.
50. Jayne Onwumere. She is the founder and director of Property World Africa Network (PWAN) Group, a real estate company that started in Lagos before stretching across the world to grant relief and comfort to homeowners. She has invested and played a big role in improving the real estate sector and earned the name, Queen of real estate network marketing.
51. Lady Maiden Ibru.  She is a Public Affairs and Communication Consultant, Media Executive and Newspaper Proprietor. She was CEO of Guardian Press Limited. She is currently the Publisher of the Guardian Newspaper, a role she took up after the demise of her husband, Alex Ibru. Lady maiden is also a philanthropist on the platform of the Trinity Foundation. In 2014, she was honored with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.
52. Joke Silva. She is the director of studies of Lufodo Group, a media corporation that consists of film production, distribution assets, and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts. In association with Kwara State University, she established the Malete Film Village. Joke is a sterling Actor that has starred in several English and Yoruba movies. She has influenced many female artists in their acting careers. She is the recipient of several awards including, the EMOTAN and SOLIDRA awards. In 2014, she was honored with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic. She is a philanthropist and a strong advocate for women’s emancipation
53. Amaka Igwe. She was a filmmaker and broadcaster. She is the founder of Top Radio 90.9 Lagos and Amaka Igwe Studios. She is credited as one of those who raised the bar in movie and TV production in Nigeria when Nollywood was in her neophyte stage. She was one of the 2^nd generation filmmakers who pioneered the video film era. Amaka Igwe Studios gave us some timeless movies before her demise such as Checkmate, Violated, Fuji House of Commotion, Rattlesnake, and so on. She was an excellent writer, producer, and director. Amaka was a recipient of many awards including Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, in 2011.
54. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe. She is the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank. She became the first woman to rise to this post. With over 30 years of expertise working across various banks, she has made noticeable the strengths of women in the financial sector and contributed a lot to the growth of the industry.
55. Janet Adeyemi, President of Women in Mining in Nigeria (WIMN). She is a geologist and civil engineer by academic training. Janet has won many awards and earned global recognition in different positions.  She is a Fellow of the Nigerian Geoscience Society. She launched WIMIN in 2006 to awaken and restore mining in Nigeria.
56. Oluwatoyin Akinlade, a medical doctor. She is the first female Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. She assumed the role in 2020. She has since established several transformations in the ministry.
57. Kemi Adeosun on our list of achievers. She has indeed created quite a stir and displayed excellence in all her leadership roles. She was the commissioner of Finance in Ogun state from 2011 to 2015 where she contributed a great deal toward the growth of the state. She was the Minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,  from 2015 to 2018.
58. Tairiye Isoun Gbadegesin. She is the managing Director, Harith Infrastructure Investment Limited. She rose to this position in 2020 and earned global recognition as well as many recommendations. She has over 15 years of experience in financial services. She was part of the start-up team to create the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and was listed as one of the Leading Ladies Africa (LLA) 50 Leading Ladies in corporate Nigeria in 2019.
59. Ola Brown Orekunrin, a medical doctor. She is a trainee helicopter pilot and an entrepreneur who founded West Africa’s air ambulance service, the Flying Doctors Nigeria in 2009. She is widely recognized and is the recipient of several awards.
60. Damilola Ogunbiyi, the Chief Executive Officer of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL). She is one of the people proffering solutions in the Energy and Power sector. She rekindled the strengths of women when she became the first female Managing Director of the Nigeria Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in 2019.
61. Gladys Igomu. She is the founder of Etema Farms and Agro Consultancy. Men are famous for being in the lead space of food crop production but women are beginning to rise above the initial limitations.
