Dangote’s new refinery, which was inaugurated on the 22nd of May 2023 has raised the bar to unlock not only Nigeria’s potential and capacity to be the best energy powerhouse but the world’s as well.
This monumental project led by Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest person in Africa and Nigeria has the potential to bring about significant economic, social, and environmental changes.
Aiming to build the world’s largest refinery, Aliko Dangote didn’t wish for it but rather worked towards it as shown in the information he disclosed in September 2013 about his future plans for the refinery and how he had obtained a sum of $ 3.3 billion in financing the refinery.
LOCATION OF THE REFINERY
The refinery is located in Lagos state (one of the most populated cities in Nigeria) at the Lekki Trade Fair zone in Lekki which is about 26,300 hectares of land. This is the perfect place because it allows for convenient shipment of refined petroleum products to global markets.
AIM AND VISION
This refinery is not just an ordinary one, it runs at an average of 650,000bpd (barrels per day) and its primary goal is to convert different types of crude oil into clean, high-quality fueled meeting the strongest specifications of Euro-v which is ensuring they are environmentally safe and have lower emissions.
The refinery is aimed at producing a range of fuels, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and polypropylene which is a material used in the production of plastic products. In addition to this, the refinery will contribute to the country’s energy independence and reduce its reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
This project will help stimulate economic growth by providing 13,500 direct jobs 100,000 indirect and jobs in the region and promoting local industries. Ultimately, Dangote’s refinery is ready to shape the energy landscape and promote sustainable development.
FUTURE PRODUCTION
Dangote’s refinery is designed to produce up to 50 million liters of gasoline and 15 million liters of diesel daily. The expected annual production at the refinery includes approximately 10.4 million tonnes of gasoline, 4.6 million tonnes of diesel, and 4 million tonnes of jet fuel.
Additionally, the refinery will produce around 0.69 million tonnes of polypropylene, 0.24 million tonnes of propane, 32,000 tonnes of Sulphur, and 0.5 million tonnes of carbon black feed each year.
