Esther Okoronkwo became the face of a distressing story this week, not for a goal or an assist, but for a wave of racist abuse aimed at her on Instagram.
A Super Falcons forward and AFC Toronto favourite, she posted footage accusing hotel staff in Casablanca of stealing cash from her and four teammates, just days before Nigeria’s WAFCON 2026 opener against Malawi.
What followed was a torrent of monkey emojis and other dehumanising comments, prompting both the Nigeria Football Federation and her Canadian club to publicly defend her ahead of Tuesday’s kickoff in Rabat.
According to Okoronkwo’s own account, housekeeping staff at the Hotel Marriott in Casablanca took nearly $700 from her room alone, while several teammates also lost smaller sums before the squad relocated to Rabat.
Moroccan authorities moved quickly, arresting a hotel employee who confessed under questioning and received a six-month prison sentence after fingerprint evidence linked him to each affected room. Despite that swift resolution, Okoronkwo’s honesty about the ordeal triggered a fresh wave of hostility online, showing how quickly public sympathy for an athlete can curdle into abuse.
This controversy lands at a crucial moment for Nigerian football. Nigeria travelled to Morocco in pursuit of a record-extending eleventh WAFCON crown after edging the same hosts 3-2 in the 2024 final, a tournament in which Okoronkwo topped the assist charts with six.
Her club form backs up that pedigree too, as she racked up 11 goals and 8 assists for AFC Toronto during the club’s Supporters’ Shield-winning 2025 Northern Super League campaign. So why does a player with that resume still have to fend off racist trolling online? It’s a question Nigerian football authorities are now asking loudly.

NFF And AFC Toronto Rally Behind Okoronkwo
Nigerian football authorities wasted no time condemning the abuse. The federation released a statement on Monday evening, insisting that “the racist abuse and emojis directed at our player make absolutely no sense, especially as the individual responsible for the theft was apprehended, made to return the stolen cash in full, and sentenced to six months in prison.”
Meanwhile, AFC Toronto echoed that message on their own social channels, stressing that racism has no place “in football, in sport, or in our communities.” Both organisations confirmed the squad remained fully focused on their WAFCON opener, unbothered by the distraction.

How Investigators Cracked The Case
Team Security Officer Juliana Ulam explained the process to ESPN, revealing that Moroccan police collected fingerprints from every room before identifying the housekeeping staff involved. “It was during the questioning that the suspect confessed. He is one of the housekeepers. Only one person was involved,” Ulam said. Consequently, the suspect is expected to repay the players in full, though the club and federation stress that no refund can undo the emotional toll of the racist backlash that followed.
Okoronkwo’s Defiant Reply
Rather than retreat from public view, Okoronkwo posted a message of resilience on her Instagram Story. “Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that. We move forward with pride, unity and determination. See you on the pitch,” she wrote. What a response!
Nigerian journalist Colin Udoh amplified her stance, publicly urging FIFA and CAF to intervene over the abuse. Notably, this is not an isolated case. Super Falcons forward Rinsola Babajide faced similar racist abuse earlier this year after criticising a separate CAF ruling involving Morocco, a pattern that suggests something more troubling than a one-off incident.

Head coach Justine Madugu’s squad kicks off Group C action against tournament debutants Malawi today at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, before facing Zambia and Egypt in the days ahead.
